*** DOLPHINS TRAINING CAMP ***
Jul 30, 1999
: -- Day 3 - July 29 --
TODAY'S REPORT:
The Dolphins had a single practice yesterday afternoon as the
rookies and some veterans polished up their act in anticipation of the
return of the rest of the veterans on Friday. The practice was a
short one and little of note happened.
Players like Yatil Green, Mark Dixon, Rich Owens, Rob Baker
and Patrick Surtain had good practices while Antoine Simpson, Travis
Darden, Larry Shannon and Derrick LeVake need to perform better after
off days.
OUTSTANDING PLAYS:
WR Robert Baker showed off determination and leaping ability
on one pass over the middle, making a terrific catch. Otherwise, no
particular plays stood out from the rest.
JJ'S COMMENTS:
JJ praised Rich Owens and Robert Baker for their work and
talent on Thursday. JJ singled out Baker's kick returning ability and
Owens' intelligence.
Mostly, however, JJ stated that he was happy to have the
rest of the veterans reporting on Friday and that he was looking
forward to beginning full practices - especially, the middle drill.
ROSTER MOVES:
None reported on Thursday.
FUTURE EVENTS:
The Dolphins will begin full practices on Friday, July 30th
at 9:15 AM with the full team. They will practice twice Friday and
Saturday before having their first scrimmage on Sunday.
INJURY REPORT:
Sammie Burroughs and OJ Brigance are still out with back
problems, but everyone else is working.
EYEWITNESS REPORTS:
None today.
My Comments:
The pending holdout of Oronde Gadsden is very disappointing to
me and not particularly smart. There are too many talented players on
the team right now for him to start training camp in the doghouse with
JJ.
Sure, Gadsden had a fine year last year for a newcomer, but it
was hardly a record setting performance. And he's not far enough
removed from the Arena league to be playing games with his own future.
It appears, however, that Gadsden's holdout is mostly his
agent's idea. If that's the case, then Gadsden had better tell this
guy to get stuffed and get his butt into camp.
As for Richmond Webb, he will certainly be staying away from
camp for the immediate future as the Dolphins and his agent battle
over his contract.
However, I believe that the longer that Mark Dixon and Brent
Smith get to practice in his place, the less likely JJ is to sign Webb
to a good long term deal.
On the other hand, an injury to either Dixon or Smith could
change that situation in a hurry.
