*** DOLPHINS TRAINING CAMP ***
Jul 29, 1999
: -- Day 2 - July 28 --
TODAY'S REPORT:
The Dolphins had their first day of practice with pads on
Wednesday as the rookies and selected veterans went through their
workouts. Two practices were held at 9:00 AM and 4:15 PM. Each
practice lasted about an hour without serious incident or injury.
All players who were supposed to attend the practices were
present, although Tim Bowens had a bit of a run-in with JJ about his
appearance at the practice.
JJ initially told Bowens that if he reported on Wednesday at
or under his assigned weight, Bowens would not have to start practice
until Friday. However, Bowens - knowing that he was still a few
pounds overweight, didn't report on Wednesday morning to weigh in.
Naturally, JJ was a little upset about this and called Bowen's
agent, who talked Bowens into coming in and getting weighed. Bowens
is still a few pounds over his assigned weight and JJ will fine him,
but has said that Bowens does not have to start practicing until
Friday.
Also during practice, there was a scare when Yatil Green made
a leaping catch of a deep pass, but then didn't get up for a couple of
minutes. It turned out that he'd just fallen on the ball and had the
wind knocked out of him.
The players who suffered major injuries last year all
practiced and looked healthy, including Brian Walker, Shawn Wooden
and Mark Dixon.
OUTSTANDING PLAYS:
The play of the day was Yatil Green's leaping catch between
double coverage by Greg Jeffries and Brian Walker. His subsequent
time on the ground is the scare of the day.
JJ'S COMMENTS:
JJ didn't have much of substance to say after the first day of
practice, although he did praise Cecil Collins for his efforts during
the day. JJ also mentioned that he thought that OJ McDuffie and Dwight
Hollier were among the most professional players on the team.
JJ also said that this was the most talented group of running
backs that he's ever had from "top to bottom".
Other than that, JJ didn't have much specific to say other
than to state that he's still very excited about this team.
ROSTER MOVES:
Rookie OL Justin Glasgow and WR/QB Todd Doxzon were waived on
Tuesday. Doxzon, however, may be brought back if he clears waivers.
FUTURE EVENTS:
The Dolphins will practice once on Thursday at 3:45 PM before
the veterans show up on Friday morning.
INJURY REPORT:
OJ Brigance and Sammie Burroughs are still recovering from
back injuries. It's not clear how long either will be out.
EYEWITNESS REPORTS:
We do have one very brief eyewitness report today from dmx:
Today i went to the dolphins training camp, and for the first training
camp of all year, it was quite exciting. Yatil Green looked excellent
with 2 amazing catches and Cecil Collins impressed me with his
emmit-smith style of running back. J.J. Johnson also looked terrific
with his speed and mobility..he broke away in full contact drills at
least twice. I must also comment that joe wong looked out of
shape..he ran after the pracitce because one of the coaches made
him..he was slow as hell.
My Comments:
First of all, I have some news to impart - because of work
commitments, daily training camp reports will not be posted until the
evening following the day of the practice. In other words, I won't be
able to report on Wednesday's practices until Thursday evening.
This will be the case until August 23rd during the week. On
weekends, I expect to get the reports out earlier.
The big training camp news of the day was the problems with
Tim Bowens. It's not a good thing to piss off JJ at the beginning of
training camp, even though JJ cut Bowens a little slack. While I can
understand Tim not being able to lose the weight, I don't understand
not showing up for weigh-in.
Did Tim really thing that JJ wouldn't notice? Or did he just
think that JJ wouldn't care?
However, what seems most likely to me is that Tim didn't do
any thinking at all about the subject.
Oh well - I'm sure he'll be losing quite a bit of weight over
the next 3 weeks or so.
The Yatil Green scare must have caused JJ to grow a few grey
hairs very quickly - and then to lose them just as quickly when Yatil
turned out to be OK.
As far as the next few days go, the first big milestone of
training camp will be the scrimmage on Sunday. If it's not on
SportsChannel Florida, I shall expect lots of eyewitness reports from
all you Florida fans out there.
