*** DOLPHINS TRAINING CAMP ***
Aug 01, 1997: -- Day 17 - July 30th --
TODAY'S REPORT:
The Dolphins held a single practice Wednesday afternoon at 4:15
PM after a morning of team meetings, in what has been a normal Wednesday
schedule. Other than the surgery to rookie cornerback Sam Madison, it
was an uneventful day.
Players that stood out in Wednesday's practice included safety
Shawn Wooden, who picked off a batted ball and made a nice return
before the play was whistled dead. And Dan Marino lead the Dolphins'
offense on a near-perfect 2 minute drill against the first team
defense.
Unfortunately, there was a fair amount of bad news for 3 players
on Wednesday, as punter Rob Deignan, wide receiver James Dye and rookie
cornerback/safety Hudhaifa Ismaeli were cut to bring the roster down to
83 players.
Also making the news yesterday was wide receiver Fred Barnett,
who, just like last year, is making a faster-that-expected recovery
from his arthoscopic surgery on Sunday. He is currently running a 3
hour per day rehabilitation regimen to get back on the field.
TODAY'S EVENTS:
The Dolphins have one practice and one walk through session
scheduled for Thursday and a practice and a walk through also scheduled
for Friday.
INJURY REPORTS:
WR Fred Barnett (right knee), Jerome Daniels (left leg) and WR
Scott Miller (left knee) participated in intensive rehabilitation on
Wednesday, doing conditioning drills and, in Barnett and Miller's case,
catching passes from a passing machine.
WR Kirby Dar Dar (right knee), WR Yatil Green (right knee), LB
Larry Izzo (left Achilles tendon), CB Sam Madison (left ankle), and DE
Daniel Stubbs (left fibula) missed practice.
EYEWITNESS REPORTS:
Sorry, still none.
My Comments:
Training camp has gotten to the point where the roster is just
starting to solidify and players are starting to distinguish themselves,
for better or worse. Between the cuts on Wednesday and the reported
cuts on Thursday, the Dolphins have begun the trimming down process.
Guys who obviously aren't going to make the team are being let go first,
to allow for more competition between the remaining players to determine
who will be on the roster on August 31st.
Of course, some of these players will be picked up by other
teams and perhaps some will even play in the NFL in the future, but by
and large, most of the players cut this early will be bagging groceries
or delivering Fedex packages in the fall.
