MONDAY AFTERNOON:
In the aftermath of the first pre-season game, the team held
one practice on Monday at 3:30 PM. The team worked out in shells in
the afternoon heat with limited contact.
The biggest news of the day was that OT Vernon Carey returned
to full practice after being injured during the Jaguars game on
Saturday night. He showed no ill effects from the contusion he
suffered during the game and an MRI showed no damage to the knee.
RB Lorenzo Booker missed practice to attend the birth of his
child, but WR Marty Booker returned to practice for the first time
since last week.
The practice started out with individual and special teams
drills and featured Jay Feely punting as a change of pace. Ted Ginn,
Jr, Az-Zahir Hakim and Travis Daniels all worked as punt returners with
Ginn and Az-Hakim getting the majority of the work.
Despite the poor showing in the pre-season game on Saturday,
the starting offensive line remained the same as it was against
Jaguars - at least, to start the practice. However, after getting
blown up by Kevin Vickerson and Mkristo Bruce in team drills, rookie
Drew Mormino was replaced at starting left guard by Chris Liwienski.
Trent Green continued to work mostly with the first string on
offense and looked better than he has. He appears to be working hard
to prove that he deserves the starting job. The highlight offensive
play of the day was a 30 yard Green-to-Hagan pass down the right
sideline.
John Beck also looked good, lobbing perfect passes to Mike
Malone and Ted Ginn. Ginn is lining up on the outside with the
starters, putting Chambers in the slot on three WR sets.
Cleo Lemon, however, had a rough workout. He worked almost
exclusively with the second team and Will Allen picked off two of his
passes during the practice.
On the defense, Rodrique Wright caught Jesse Chatman from
behind on a sweep, showing some excellent quickness. Chatman was
working as the second string RB, running behind Reagan Mauia.
TUESDAY MORNING:
The team worked in full pads on Tuesday morning, starting
again with individual and special teams drills. Lorenzo Booker missed
another day of camp for the birth of his child, while Joey Porter, Az
Hakim, rookie LB Kelvin Smith, OT Mike Rosenthal and Andre Goodman
rode the bikes.
During field goal drills, Jay Feely made several routine kicks
in the 40-45 yard range, but also nailed a 55-yarder and two from 60
yards.
In one of the first team drills, WR Derek Hagan roasted Jason
Allen. Allen was left so far behind that, even though Hagan had to
slow down for Trent Green's throw, he still had a touchdown.
According to onlookers, Trent Green is consistently having
problems with accuracy beyond 20-25 yards.
John Beck, however, is not having the same problems throwing
deep. He completed a series of nice passes to Derek Hagan, Mike
Malone, Kerry Reed and David Sutton.
The tight ends were reportedly much more involved in this
practice than in other practices and were the target of many more
throws than usual. Rookie TE Aaron Halterman is making a strong case
for a spot on the roster, while veteran Justin Peelle is having
problems holding on to the ball.
The offensive line was shuffled a lot during the morning
practice. Drew Mormino and Chris Liwienski split time working with
the first team at left guard while Anthony Alabi took a few snaps at
left guard during 9-on-9 drills.
TUESDAY AFTERNOON:
The team had a light workout on Tuesday afternoon as the list
of injuries grows. Most of the injuries aren't serious, but PK Sam
and Will Allen were added to the injury list. Keith Traylor, Joey
Porter, Mike Rosenthal, Kelvin Smith and Marty Booker all rode the
bikes on Tuesday afternoon.
Derek Hagan continues to impress and had a nice one-handed
catch on Tuesday afternoon. Ted Ginn also had a one-handed grab, but
dropped an easy one later on.
Backup CB Michael Lehan continues to impress by providing
tight coverage and picking off Trent Green twice.
Most of the practice period on Tuesday afternoon was devoted
to special teams - notably, kickoff coverage. Despite not giving up
any big plays on Saturday against the Jaguars, Coach Cameron said he
was not pleased with their play.
ROSTER BATTLES:
The offensive line is currently in disarray as the coaches
search for the best combination to be the starters. Drew Mormino has
been bounced in and out of the starting lineup, while LJ Shelton has
been working with the 3rd string.
At wide receiver, Derek Hagan has been the most consistent
receiver over the last three practices. The rookie wide receivers
don't seem to be standing out as much as they did in the earlier
weeks, although both Kerry Reed and David Sutton had at least one
highlight catch on Tuesday.
Jesse Chatman seems firmly entrenched as the backup running
back while Ronnie Brown is not having an easy time with the chaos on
the offensive line.
ROSTER MOVES:
None were recorded this week.
INJURY REPORT:
OL Joe Toledo (foot) and CB Andre Goodman (shoulder) continue
to remain on the sideline and on the PUP list. OT Mike Rosenthal
(shoulder) and LB Joey Porter (knee) also missed all the practices
on Monday and Tuesday.
WR Marty Booker has joined the list of veterans who only
practice once a day as he sat out the Tuesday afternoon practice with
Keith Traylor and Az-Zahir Hakim.
LB Kelvin Smith missed both practices on Tuesday and WR PK Sam
missed the afternoon session with unspecified problems.

My Comments:
It's disturbing that Trent Green seems to be having accuracy
issues. Most onlookers say that Green is routinely throwing behind or
short of his receivers. Of course, that could be due to getting
familiar with his receivers, but why don't the other quarterbacks have
the same problems?
On the flip side, reports continue to praise John Beck's
accuracy in most cases and say he has the best deep touch on the ball
of any of the quarterbacks on the team. While he clearly isn't ready
to assume the starting job just yet, it's nice to hear that all he
needs is seasoning.
Clearly, however, the offensive line is the biggest issue
currently facing the team. Coach Cameron seems to think that they
will pull together rapidly, but only time will tell. It will be
interesting to see how well they play on Thursday night.
