TODAY'S SUMMARY:
The Dolphins conducted one full-pads practice on Saturday
afternoon at 3:30 in the full South Florida heat. It was another
tough practice, including some interesting battles, but the biggest
news for Saturday was not who was on the field, but who was off of
it.
LB Joey Porter sat out his second straight practice to rest
his knee and is being evaluated by doctors. He is having some
recurring soreness in his right knee after have an arthroscopic
procedure on it in May. He has also been spotted wearing a brace on
the knee during practice.
However, it does not appear that this is a serious injury at
this time. Porter is a relatively older player and is bound to have
some soreness in training camp. Coach Cameron has been giving his
veterans plenty of leeway as far as taking practices off to rest their
aches and pains and the fact that Porter has missed a practice or two
is not cause for serious concern.
On the field, the offense worked on the quick passing attack
on Saturday, with quarterbacks taking 3 step drops and firing quickly
to running backs and tight ends. They also worked on the red-zone
offense and had the 2nd team defense working against the first team
offense. Encouragingly, the offense scored on 3 of 4 plays with
Ronnie Brown carrying the ball all four times.
Onlookers agreed that Ronnie Brown had his strongest
performance of training camp on Saturday, catching short passes and
converting several of those into long gains. Add that to his 3 scores
in the red zone and Ronnie looked very strong on Saturday.
The quarterback of the day was Trent Green, who looked the
strongest among a shakey crowd. Cleo Lemon did not have his best
day.
And Travis Daniels had one interception caught and another one
dropped. Daniels is getting noticed routinely for his play and it's
almost entirely been in a good way. It will be difficult for Andre
Goodman to unseat him when he returns.
The team took Sunday off and will return to the practice field
on Monday.
ROSTER BATTLES:
There wasn't much written about any of the wide receivers on
Saturday, so that battle seems essentially unchanged. As I wrote
earlier, Travis Daniels continues to make a case for retaining the
starting cornerback spot, even when Andre Goodman returns.
Rodrique Wright and Paul Soliai are the second string
defensive tackles, while Jason Allen remains a backup at cornerback -
probably behind Michael Lehan.
And it looks more and more likely that Anthony Alabi and Drew
Mormino are the starting right side of the offensive line, but we may
have an explanation. Coach Cameron said that Alabi worked extra hard
to learn the entire playbook quickly. If that is what put him in the
starting lineup, it may prove to be an effective motivator for the
rest of the team.
ROSTER MOVES:
None reported.
INJURY REPORT:
In addition to Joey Porter, Safety Yeremiah Bell (left hip
pointer), tight end David Martin (strained groin) and offensive tackle
Mike Rosenthal (strained shoulder) also didn't practice.
Andre Goodman and Joe Toledo remain on the PUP list.
EYEWITNESS REPORTS:

My Comments:
It was good to hear that Ronnie Brown finally broke out of his
shell and made some big plays - even if it was against the second
string defense. The starting running back is a huge part of Cameron's
offense and Brown will really be tested this year in a way that he's
never been tested before. Under Coach Cameron's tutelege, Ronnie
Brown will have the chance to prove that he is worth the first round
draft pick and the money being spent on him.
Unfortunately, it looks like Jason Allen is not living up to
his expectations. He could still blossom and become the player that
the team hoped he'd be, but right now it doesn't look good. If the
season started today, he'd be the number 4 cornerback and that would
be without Andre Goodman in the lineup.
I think it's fair to say that the jury is still out on Ronnie
Brown as far as whether or not he deserved to be picked number 2
overall in the draft, but Jason Allen is rapidly closing in on the
"bust" label.
