DOLPHINS: Joey Porter

The only thing I can figure, Patrick, is that they were concerned that if they cut Porter during the season, he'd go to one of the teams they were fighting for a playoff spot and give them a ton of information and play inspired and come back and bite the Fins. They didn't seem as concerned about that with Roth (would Porter have had to clear waivers?).
I can understand them not wanting to have the Porter situation blow up completely during the playoff/stretch run. And I do give them credit for suspending Porter and doing it in a way where he didn't cause a problem as a result. But I completely agree that they bungled the Roth situation and that the approaches don't seem consistent. I honestly think they ultimately underrated Roth as a player. I never understood that---I know they were ticked at him, and obviously they have a lot more information about the situation than I do, but the guy always seemed like a hard worker and potentially a pretty good player. Why dump him for nothing, especially when he's only going to be a RFA this off-season anyway?
On a related note, the team has asked Merling to drop 10 pounds by the off-season training program.... some speculation they may be thinking about moving him to OLB the way they did with Roth.

I could care less about them as far they concern Porter, who I believe is gone (he damn sure better be at this point, after this crap has come out), But if he was really refusing to come out of games, I'm wondering WTF is up with Sparano?

How does that play with the tough, disciplined approach we're led to believe the Tuna and his protege employ? I can't believe if he was really doing that, they didn't handle it differently.

I was willing to accept the Roth fiasco b/c I wrote it up to Sparano demanding respect from his players and not putting up when someone displays disrespect. I was willing to let a very promising player walk over that without bitching, because I felt that's what it takes to build a team. The team has to know who's in charge. I damn sure would have rather had Porter walk than Roth.
