Yeah, that was an irony. We wanted to get Dan a running game (and a defense btw) the downside being that is something teams wanted him to do, handoff more and pass less. Also another irony is that if we would have been successful w/ that he wouldn't have been "Dan Marino".
I remember when he had a monster year in 1986 throwing 44 TD passes. It was between him and Lawrence Taylor for player of the year. I recall discussing w/ a friend that they were both victims of their own pasts. He asked what I meant and and I told him that both had such great success previously that their performances were less of a surprise/impressive. 44 TD's would have shattered the NFL record of 36 that Dan topped in 1984 but since it was the second time he threw for more than 40 it was less of a big deal. Taylor got MVP that year by the way.
