DOLPHINS: Thigpen trade

I watched it a bunch of times this morning, and I've changed my mind. I think
that according to the rule, it was appropriate for the call to be made. The
receiver was in the air, helmets hit, the league is cracking down on it; it
all adds up to the call being made.
HOWEVER, I don't think Wilson was necessarily trying to spear or make
helmet-to-helmet contact. I counted off one second from the time the ball was
released until the collision, and the two players were running nearly head on
by the time contact was made. A defender has too many factors to consider
(speed, angles, descent of the receiver, etc) to be able to extrapolate where
and how contact might be made. He can't exactly stop time and pull out a
slide rule to figure it out. It's more just instinct and courage at that
point.
So I agree with the call, if not the rule. And I don't agree with the
labeling of Wilson as dangerous and/or dumb. Seems like we've been pining for
a safety who will hit like that for a while now.

> Right, but the argument isn't whether they will call it, but whether they
should. Just because the top of the helmet made contact doesn't mean he "led
with his helmet..." The question is the position his head was in when he made
contact. If he made contact with his face in the receiver's chest, and top of
the helmet happened to make contact with the receiver's helmet because of the
angle at which they collided, I say that should not be a penalty---that's a
textbook hit. If he ducked his head so the helmet was horizontal as he came
in, then that's a spear, and it should be called. My recollection (the replay
isn't until tonight) is that Wilson was the prior.... but either way, they'll
call either one now, and my general point is that they shouldn't call the
first. I mean, Cobbs lost this season and possibly his career because he was
tackled awkwardly last night. Should that have been a penalty? Sure, the
defender didn't mean it, but it ended up being an awkward tackle!
