I think the ruling is that on a reception, you have to establish possession all the way to the ground if you don't make a "football move" to establish possession when you're still upright. Since the ball popped out when he hit the ground and he hadn't established possession to that point with a football move (always sketchy on what that entails), when the ball popped out, it would've been an incomplete pass ... if JT wasn't in the right place at the right time.
