Commentary: Focus on Dolphins' close loss misses bigger picture
----------------------------------
"Those two penalties I got hurt us," said Long, who got caught for
tripping and for holding, with each flag negating long Dolphin gains.
"I can't be putting our offense in that spot."
What he can do, and will do as the season goes on, is put defenders on
their backs while making holes for Ricky and for Ronnie Brown. This
part of the long and laborious rebuilding process is easy to live
with, for it looks like the Dolphins know what they are doing.
Where it starts looking more like the curse of Cameron all over again
is when Ernest Wilford shows up on the inactive list for the season
opener. A healthy scratch. A waste of $6 million in free-agent money,
or at least a waste of one Sunday's pro-rated portion.
"Ernest has done a nice job," Sparano said. "He's a guy who works real
hard at practice."
Remember when Ted Ginn Jr. needed three games to catch his first NFL
pass last year and six to get his first start? Cameron loved his work
ethic in practice, too.
...
And if the near misses keep coming, at Arizona and beyond, you can run
me back through the processor, but not Sparano.
Tony's got the benefit of working for Parcells. Cameron, poor man, was
his own boss.
