DOLPHINS: Taylor to Redskins?

I think all teams, even rebuilding ones, need a mix of young players and veterans. A rebuilding team will definitely be younger overall, and the Fins have to get younger than they were last year (especially on defense), but I don't think you can just say "we're playing the rookies" and throw them out there. Some players develop better by playing, others develop in practice and burst onto the scene later in their careers. Part of what makes a good coach is being able to recognize which players need which kind of treatment. We learned that lesson in part last year---many of us (me included) were screaming for Beck to get playing time. Cam finally put him in, and it turns out he wasn't playing for a reason---he wasn't ready. And it didn't help that he was playing on such a bad offense---how could he hope to develop under those circumstances?

Veterans, meanwhile, can play a very important role on a rebuilding team. Ferguson is a good example---he's old and well past his prime, and will almost certainly not be around to play in any playoff games for the Fins. But, he knows the approach, he knows how to be a 3-4 nose tackle, and can be a great example for the younger players. And, in the meantime, he can provide a presence in the middle of the DL, helping the younger players on the ends develop without having to carry the entire load by themselves. Well worth a roster spot.

All that said, I think it's a long-shot that anyone too worthwhile will be cut in the coming weeks. Anyone cut at this point is cut for a reason. You're always looking to upgrade the bottom 1/3 of your roster, etc., and I think that's important. Whether veteran or young, Ireland and Co. should be looking for upgrades for those guys. But that's all it's gonna be---it's pretty unlikely that there's going to be a starting-caliber Safety or CB or whatever released. So I'm not sure the cap room will come too much into play. Might be more useful for locking up some of the guys we have to long-term contracts.

I am more concerned about winning. Rebuilding or not I still want us to win above all else. Kevin Carter is a good example off the top of my head. He was old when he got here but I liked him. He was still a good player and he helped us for a couple of years. If someone out there is better than what we have we have to consider him.

What I'm more concerned about are veteran contracts for players that are unlikely to be here in 2 or 3 years when the team will hopefully be competitive. Players that are taking playing time away from the guys drafted from 2006-2009.

A player can be in his mid-20s and still be a veteran. Such a guy has been around long enough to have a track record but -- at most positions -- still has many years left in the game. I could certainly see the Dolphins bringing in such a player.

Or they could bring in an older veteran at a position that's precariously populated by young players who could provide some leadership for a few years.

Either move makes sense. The Dolphins now have plenty of money to maneuver. And it's not as if Parcells/Ireland are going to overspend, based on their brief track record in Miami.

Let's stay away from veterans. This team has been in a perpetual rebuilding
mode for way too long now. The Dolphins need to find out which young
players are NFL players or not.
