Dan Marino's single-season yardage record gaining in stature -

Local choirs sing every year when the NFL's last unbeaten team
inevitably loses and the historical distinction of the Dolphins' 1972
Perfect Season remains unique.

But year by year the one major season passing record still held by
Miami's Dan Marino grows in stature to a point approaching 17-0. With
every challenge that is parried, Marino's 5,084 yards in 1984 seems
taller, bigger, more beyond reach.

Peyton Manning and Tom Brady couldn't catch it even as they set TD
records in MVP seasons.

This year, the Saints' Drew Brees and Cardinals' Kurt Warner were on
pace to surpass Marino, but barring miracle finishes, neither will.
Brees would need 753 yards in his last two games to break No. 13's
25-year-old standard, and Warner would need 795.

If two numbers signify the best of the Dolphins' franchise, the first
must be 17-0, but right behind it, and gaining, is 5,084.
