DOLPHINS: Quincy Carter in Town

I'd rather not see Henne start in week 1. Goes back to the question of whether Beck was "ruined" or not by playing too soon last year.... I think a lot of things have to go into the equation when deciding whether to play a rookie QB. One of them is definitely the QB himself---how mature he is, how ready he is, etc. Like Mark pointed out, there have been QBs who have started as rookies and used it as a good learning experience---the coach has to know whether the player has that kind of poise (and I do think Henne seems more poised than Beck, though that's just a guess that's not really based on anything).

But I think what might be even more important in that decision is the OL. The problem with playing Beck last year wasn't just that he was a rookie, but that our OL was so bad. Beck's first exposure to the NFL was having to immediately run for his life, having guys in his face before he even had the ball in his hands, etc. I think it can't be a coincidence that now he seems jumpy in the pocket and too quickly goes to the checkdown. Ruined is too strong a word, but I think it's going to take Beck some time to get past his experience from last year---not just the confidence he lost (which, I agree that if he's going to be a legit NFL QB, then struggling as a rookie shouldn't hurt his confidence that much), but also just the experience of constantly being under way too much pressure. Based on his experience, in the NFL, you either go to the checkdown right away or you get plastered (and fumble). Now he has to unlearn that, which sets him back.

So with Henne, I don't have a huge problem with him starting at some point in his rookie year, but let's wait until we get the OL sorted out a bit, have a consistent group in there, and get the offense into at least some sort of rhythm. And if that doesn't happen this year, I don't have any problem with him sitting for the year and coming in as the presumptive starter next year. It's not like the decision on who to start at QB in week 1 is going to make the difference between a good season or a bad one for this team.....

Though I am not too crazy about the idea it wouldn't surprise me to see Henne become the starter for Week 1. I mean so far you could say he has only played decent against 2nd and 3rd teamers but he also looked great against Florida's defense in his last bowl game.

I think it's somewhat encouraging, though, that the one QB who does seem to be progressing and showing something is Henne. He's not the answer this year, but the fact that it sounds like he is looking pretty good and actually looking better than the other two is encouraging for the long-term, I think. I'm disappointed Beck hasn't looked better---I wonder if throwing him in there last year completely ruined him. But let's be honest, how much does this year matter, anyway? If McCown is no better than he's ever been (which I've always assumed would be the case), does it really matter? But if Henne is showing that he can be a solid answer long-term.... that's actually a fairly exciting thing coming out of camp, IMO. It's just that it's not going to lead to anything immediately.

I saw that as well. I had been feeling much more positive about the team with recent reports on Ronnie/Ricky, Hagan, and the rookie at RG. But now I'm getting ready to hit the panic button. I can sort of understand why they brought in QC. You'd think after a full week in camp that at least one of the qb's would be showing some improvement. It sounds like they're all regressing. 2 out of 22 and then those were dump-offs??? Are you kidding me? I'd expect a high school qb to come in off the street and hit at least one downfield pass out of 22 attempts.
