Yep - my heart is that they keep him and figure out how to maximize his contribution and minimize any weaknesses because I think he's a special talent as a receiving TE. But, sometimes what I hope and what coaches see are 2 different things :-)

As I recall, we did tag & trade Landry for a 4th & 7th (so, to your point, next to nothing for sure). I'd franchise tag him and be open to negotiating a trade for the right comp unless I just absolutely needed something from the TE position that he simply can't bring. I'd prefer he remain with us for at least 2022, but I can see letting him go and doing the best to get what you can fo

The idea of moving Howard is one I'd be hesitant to do also because we lost Flores. Talent & experience can cover coaching drop-off, especially in the short term. With so many moving pieces, I'd be cautious in creating a Howard-sized hole on D.

184. Re: OL FA
Do you mean a trade offer to the Texans and Watson has said he would waive his no-trade to be traded to us? I.e. same basic place it was commonly understood to be prior to the trade deadline when the only thing holding it back was resolution of his legal issues? Just making sure I'm understanding.

185. OL FA
Since our opportunity in 2020 for complete reboot, I've thought that FA needs to be a part of building our OL into a legitimate strength. We have more cap space than anyone and can gain an additional $13.6M in space by releasing the following: Butler, Hurns, Fejedelem, Carter, Little. While they'd need to be replaced in terms of simply having a 53-man roster, I don't think we'd suffer measurabl

I'm not sure what change you noticed in the team last season, but I do think there was a strong undercurrent of quality young talent contributing...it was often just overshadowed by: - a long losing streak - Watson drama - a couple of massive gaps (OL and offensive coaching chaos) That undercurrent might have been a big part of what you were noticing? I watched a couple of old full game

For me, I'm having trouble getting excited about any of the hires on the offensive side because we were such a cluster-F last year that almost anything would be better. I need to get out of that mindset and try to evaluate "will it work" and "will it be good enough, not just better than 2021". I don't think it takes a genius to see what McDaniel apparently does when he com

And Frank Smith as OC. He spent time as an OL coach with New Orleans 2010-2014, during which time players (Evans, Nicks, Bushrod)they drafted in the 4th/5th rounds became pro-bowlers & Evans even an All-Pro. Not saying Jackson, Eichenberg & Hunt are or can be those guys...but hopefully he's developed an understanding of how to build & operate an OL w/some of those guys & infusio

I agree that we shouldn't expect a copy/paste of the SF offense or anything. It may be that they choose to use the franchise tag on Mike G to buy them a year to see how he performs in the offense.

Are you looking at Gesicki as a TE operating in an offense much like Kittle in SF and potentially having similar receiving numbers? In 2021, Kittle did more with fewer

Yeah, I don't know what Tua's ceiling is, but I know it would be much more difficult to reach if the HC didn't believe in you and the offensive staff and approach was a complete CF.

Perhaps - I'm honestly not football smart enough to know what's possible in discrete areas of development. My understanding is that Kittle is an absolute beast in run blocking and in the passing game and that elite-ness both/and is what makes him so special. For Gesicki to approach that, they'd have to unlock some serious improvement in the run blocking area. I'd love it if they could, obvious

More broadly, my top wish for the offseason (now that HC is settled) is a killer OL coach who can figure out how to field an OL that doesn't hamstring the entire offense and can actually be value-add (yeah, I know I'm overusing that term today). I tend to believe that acquiring veteran talent, whether by FA or trade, will be part of the solution, but it would be nice to have someone who can figu

I really like Giesicki, but I don't know that resigning him will be how they choose to use the $$. From what I've seen - and not saying it has to be a 100% copy/paste from his past experience - he emphasizes the run game and TE has to be a real value-add within that context. If Mike G were to expect a contract in the range of Goedert, Andrews, Henry (~$14M/yr), I know we could afford it but I

I tend to agree with many of the points made above: - gotta be able to get good assistants - OL coach is absolutely critical - feel like we have an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" scenario on defense I'm particularly intrigued that he was part of seeing how a team w/o an elite QB can go deep into the playoffs multiple times recently.

One of the strongest narratives related to our desert wandering has been that Ross' meddling in operations is a significant net-negative. If this leads to him selling to someone who can hire the right folks to deliver culture & results, then it may be for the best. My understanding is that there's already a succession plan in place, but I don't know anything about it.

It is tough to think that without moving an inch over the past 2 yrs, we could have had: - Herbert - Justin Jefferson - Jonathan Taylor - Jamar Chase (or keep Waddle and the add'l 2023 1st rounder) - Creed Humphrey And that's just the draft and keeping the seemingly keeper picks we took and like (Hunt, Davis, Phillips & Holland) in just the 1st & 2nd rounds over the past coup

I agree it's not the 85 Bears or 2000 Ravens - not even close. And I most certainly agree that we've not had an answer for the Bills offense in recent years. So, what I wrote wasn't to imply that it's an elite finished product. That said, I think the key to consistently competing with Josh Allen & the Bills is a full-team effort with more onus on our offense for improving than our defens

I do agree that every caveat narrows the list. However - and this may be applying a broader workplace standard to this specific situation (which may not be a good way of looking at things) - I also think that seeing things that currently work well and communicating "if it aint broke, don't fix it" isn't bad in and of itself. For the defense, I think that's a reasonable perspective.

I think Rodgers isn't much more than a 1-2 yr option @ QB, but the possibility of playing beyond that is much more of an option than it used to be. In terms of "win now", I think our D (especially if we resign Ogbah as our only truly significant FA on that side) is good but I hesitate to say SB capable even if paired with a good offense. For whatever reason, this is a "today&qu

There's been so much info floated out there regarding Flores' firing, that it's tough for me to figure out what's likely true or not. But, if this is true, it would be one of the more unprofessional things I've heard of a coach doing. I've maintained that Tua hasn't earned the right for the team not to be looking at upgrading @ QB. But, there are right and wrong ways of going about things.

Regarding Tua, I think it would be unbelievably helpful to understand: - how his arm strength compares to Brees' at about the same age - how much it can be improved (no matter how it compares to Brees') I think his accuracy & timing are elite-level right now. And, I think he has both the brains & maturity to reduce his mistakes. But, I think players like Brees take a few seasons

Yeah, I think a lot of the defensive coaching prowess was Flo himself. On the player side, I like how so many of the key pieces are not scheme dependent. Both CB's - while expensive vets - can cover well. Ogbah (if we resign), Wilk, Davis, Sieler, Phillips - they're all good d-line/edge guys in any scheme. Holland is a good young safety pure & simple. I think we'll potentially see some

In terms of keeping the defensive players together, we have a great shot. Ogbah is the only truly significant and scheme-diverse UFA on that side of the ball. I did a quick look at our cap, and we currently have $73.6M in space with 37 players under contract for 2022 (for context, 37 is about average across the league currently I'd say from eye-balling). If we let go of the following players

Just read an article on brownsnation entitled what went wrong for Bill Belichick in Cleveland. Though not a perfect 1:1 match on all details, it seems his firing had a number of similar elements: - abrasive with assistants - friction with QB (though Kosar had taken CLE to the AFC championship 3x before Bill arrived, so certainly different that way) - known for having an incredibly high foo

Yeah, I don't think rebuild should be on the table. We have legitimate young talent and some notable veteran talent AND our cap is in good shape. I think a rebuild is in order when you assess that the whole thing isn't working and doesn't have a reasonable chance to work on the player talent/cost side. Without knowing the inner stuff that I'll probably never know and, like the rest of us, ha

Not saying you're wrong about too many better options out there, but would love to hear the short list. I actually think he learned from mistakes and: a) demonstrated it over the last 1/2 of the season b) got more out of the talent than many coaches would have (speaking of 2.5 years of his tenure...admittedly the first 1/2 of this season was a cluster and I think a lot of it had to do with t
