Dude, 50% of their job is run support-ask any rookie trying to make a team. They voted in a player that was deficient in half his responsibilities?!?! And no, STs don't make up for that.

Ok, you're right. The entire world is crazy and you know the truth, that he didn't score 22 touchdowns in his career as a defensive player (not 1st all time in non-offensive TD's, or having scored 3 on offense and 9 on returns), that HOF coaches who faced him during his career didn't credit him for having forever changed the game of football in the NFL with his play, that offensive coordinators didn't have to design gameplans around him, that he didn't register HOF-level stats at the CB position, that the guy wasn't head and shoulders above everyone who played at his position during the era he played in, and that Deion Sanders isn't one of the best players in the history of the game.

The guy didn't like to tackle. He chose to preserve his body so that he could stay on the field to continue having the kind of impact on defense (and other facets of the game) that often played an enormous role in helping his team win games. And for that, according to you he isn't worthy of the Hall of Fame, and in fact inducting him into it in light of this is shame worthy. He's not one of the best cornerbacks in the history of the game to you.

Again, HE named HIMSELF. Early in his career, when he started calling himself that, it was a pretty egotistical and thoroughly unearned thing to do. Makes a great sound bite, though, so Berman used it.

Gentlemen. I think it's clear that none of you can support an untenable position. I've seen a lot of posturing, legerdemain with silly and irrelevant comparisons, and I can see that this position, while untenable, is wildly popular. What this tells me is that Deion Sanders is one of the greatest con men of all time, he's sold enough people a bill of goods to get himself inducted into the Pro Football HOF. I think this entitles him to induction into the Flimflam Man's hall of fame(or shame).
I don't hate Deion, I'm just in contempt of him, both as a player and a public figure. I don't know the man.
From what I've seen from your arguments, I'll never have to change that opinion.
It doesn't matter anyway, the HOF voters can vote anyone they want into the Hall, and this guy's in.

Being “deficient” or not in any particular skill isn’t really the criteria for Canton though.

Having made significant contributions to pro football is. That’s the question, and at least 80% of the HofF voters rendered that indeed Sanders had made contribution enough.

Another flimsy attempt at misdirection. There is NO comparison between requirements for the two jobs. Receivers are supposed to catch the ball. Only nowadays in the era of big receivers are they requested-REQUESTED-to block. They are receivers. Cornerbacks are REQUIRED to cover the best receivers on the other team on passing plays and come up to fill the gap and either make the tackle of force the runner to the sideline on running plays. In earlier days, this was the responsibility of the outside linebacker, but the great physical corners freed up the OLB for other duties-like rushing the passer.

By all means, close the thread. A&O is tired of having his cherished beliefs challenged.
Take a minority viewpoint and watch the knives come out.

Being “deficient” was a direct quote from you, it is not necessarily indicative of my viewpoint.

A player can be enshrined if he gets 80 % of the votes.

And I think your point was that Sanders should not have been enshrined, and that the voters, like Ed Pope, should be “ashamed.”

If it’s the “deficient” question on him as a player in general, how do you think he grades out?

RESPPONSE: I think this more applies to your position.

RESPONSE: WHOA! You made the statement that Deion did not deserve to be in the Hall of Fame basically because he did not do ALL OF THE aspects of his job in a great manner.

He doesn't play on offense so I didn't compare him to Jim Brown.

However, a baseball player DOES play both offense and defense unless he is entirely a pinch hitter.

By your OWN complaint, Babe Ruth should not have made the baseball Hall of Fame because not only was he not great as a defensive player but he was not THAT great as a high batting average contact hitter.

If these comparison seem silly to you, what's happening is that they are revealing the silliness of your statement by showing you how silly the basis of your position is.

RESPONSE: eye rolling smiley I think this statement alone shows that the below statement by you is a perfect example of how you have managed to delude yourself and how you really simply don't like him and you are letting your personal distaste (which no one can blame you for having) completely brainwash your objectivity.

More misdirection!
But ChyrenB, you're entitled to your opinion just as much as I am. It's obvious I'll never change your mind-and I guarantee you that you'll never change mine.. I've been watching this game since I was (that I remember) nine. Deion Sanders was the first (and only!) player I ever saw sidestep a tackle, and I had a strongly negative emotional response to it. No amount of objectivity will ever overcome that. I truly do not believe Sanders belongs with the greats, and I never will.
