But look at these game logs of ricky williams and ronnie brown. I just don't get it. Maybe the line did suck, but the backs didn't. Ronnie brown was gashing the baltimore ravens defense , only until the offensive coordinator abandoned the run. I watch all the games and in alot of them the run game was abandoned.
But yet we are suppose to have a punishing run game with a big slow a$$
rookie running back.

But it seems to me that when the running game was interrupted last year, it was not to pass but to run the wildcat.
The same thing happened when, on the rare occasions, we were passing in rhythmn. It was stopped when we penetrated the opposition 30 yard line to run the wildcat.
If Danny Thomas were to be used as a power runner, I would probably like it.
Like I said, slowness doesn't matter for a running back unless he's so slow he can be caught from behind when he breaks into the secondary.
Moreover, power runner are not known to be that fast anyway.
No, my complaint is that this is the re-birth (or the continuation) of the Wildcat.
We scored a lot of points with the wildcat but u can't run it with an ineffective offensive line and guys that cant pull.
We don't even know if Thomas can run it and we are short a couple RB's anyway.
I don't buy the "messin with the qbs rythm"...either they have IT or they don't. No different than coming out on 3rd down and the coming back the next series.
The problem was trying to force the issue when it clearly is not being executed properly due to poor blocking and knowing Ronnie is going to run it 9 out of 10 times.
And there was some terrible play calling last year. I agree on that point.
Don't agree about the wildcat, eesti. I think it broke up the rhythmn in countless critical situations and that the coaching staff only called it to feed their own egos and reputations (such as they were).
Agreed. But it was more often used on the first down after we had just succeeded (either by passing or traditional running) to get into what we used to call "penetration" (technically inside the opposition 20 but in our case inside the opposition 30).
They would then run at least 2 wildcat plays in succession and if the resulting third down was more than 4 yards, they would send Henne back in.
Agreed...prob just wasn't used right with an inexperienced qb like Henne.
I am excited to see us run a NE style offense. Never have been a fan of vanilla....prob why I liked the wc.
If we can combine a few things and fix a few things this offense can be more productive and maybe even exciting....example....
We have beed applauded under the tutelage of Sparano for how well we execute plays...Mayock and several others have stated this idea.
TS has promised to stop tinkering with line once camp is over which should be a big improvement over last year.
With the added speed and versatility of new draftees combined with the two above theories we should see improvement over last year with just what we have now. Prob a two game improvement.
Add in a vet QB and/or Sproles/vet o lineman and we
Kick it up two more games to 10 or 11 wins....especially when u account for....
the likely improvement of a young defense and getting back Odrick and Edds....
More speed and hitting on ST's with new additions of Gates and possibly Sproles and Sheets and the new hard hitiing killer CB draftee as a gunner
If Sparano can continue that 'stop tinkering" philosophy and churning the bottom of the roster our ST will improve even more.

Is anyone wondering how our new offense is going to look?
I have read that Dabol will use zone blocking. The type Denver used to run with smaller athletic lineman.
Not sure how our guys will fit in this system.
Also...he will adapt his offense to incorporate terminology from Hennings offense.
Dabol learned offense from Charlie Weis which is taken from the Don Coryel offense that was run by Dan Henning in NY but evolved in NE under Weis and Belichick.
It has changed over the years and often changed to suit personnel.
So how is it different if it evolved from Hennings offense under Parcels?
Dalbol was QB coach for Jets the year that Bret Favre played and OC for Browns with Colt McCoy.
Anyone have insight on what type of offense was run in Cleveland? I know it looked bad but in all fairness their best player was Peyton Hillis.

The Dan Henning offense was the old school Paul Brown offense, which was run by the Fins under Shula and the Steelers under Noll, power running and play action passing. In New England, the offense has incorporated a lot from Urban Meyer, the spreading out of the defense by using different formations and creating mismatches in personnel. That's what I expect from Daboll, a lot more spreading out the receivers, even if it's splitting out 2 TE wide with the WR. And more quick throws. Last year, 95% of our pass plays were 5 step drops. Daboll's offense used 1, 3, 5, and 7 step drops.
Very true....can't argue that fact but I'm hoping that the lack of talent was a key factor. The coaching pedigree is there and we have way more talent than Cleveland.
I think Daboll will suprise some people. He was able to run the ball down opponents throats with Hillis and then when teams knew it was coming he was able to run the ball down the opponents throats with Hillis some more. Smashmouth football tell them what you are gonna do and still be able to do it. Daboll learned well under Alvarez at Wisconsin. Alvarez was a god of smashmouth football.
