Gates, has all the things hat point to him being a star athlete, the only question about him, is can he stay healthy. His body has only been pounded for 3 or so years, on the Division 2 level, Nothing in high school
IF he can stay healthy this guy's limit is through the roof, and then some...

Cause he injurd a hamstring during the combine, and comes from division 2 school. Does his body have what it takes to handle a 16 game NFL season. Small school guys, are a risk. Another receiver who has done well from Abilene Christian is Johnny Knox. And he went further back then Gates.
WHy wasnt Davone Bess drafted if he was so good. Because the draft and evaluation process is hardly a science, especially when it comes to guys who never played at the top collegiant level...

that's kinda been Phinsfan's point all along, if he's that good you take him in the 1st, if not you pass him up all together. I laugh when people say Belicheck is a genius for getting Brady in the 6th rnd, he's not a genius, he has a horseshoe stuck up his ass on that one. If he knew Brady was gonna turn all world, he wouldn't of waited until the 6th rnd, you don't gamble on that and wait if you know he's gonna be that good.

Because you dont have to, and you would be a fool to do so. If you select a guy in the 1st that you could have gotten in the 4th, you are failing your team and organization. That is called reaching, and not good for draft strategy....

The credibility of this took a hit when they said that we didn't have a need for a speed receiver. Analysts called the lack of a speed WR a weakness beforen last season, when they realized we had no one to force the safeties off the line of scrimmage. And throughout the year, they were proven correct. For someone to say we didn't have a need there, I just don't know that they are a credible source.

Strawman argument? That is what the entire draft process is about. You evaluate, judge, and project, and you probably have a couple guys you want, the longer those multiple players stay on the board, the further you can pushing them back. When Leshoure came off the board and the other Rb jus behind him, Ireland made the move up, becasue he believe the guy he wanted wouldnt not fall far enough. If those other RB's had not come off the board, we never would have moved up.
It is a game, and if you fail to play it, then you are losing. You might as well pull a Ditka and trade all your picks for one guy... That is straw man to me..
CHoosing to not play the draft game, is a choice and that choice would equavicate to sticking your head in the sand.
He had a game plan and followed it, He got Thomas and Gates, who were both considers top guys. Lets see what happens. THey projected Turner over Hartline and we all know how that works out. But either way you have to have a plan and then stick to it. Stay away from emotional spur of the moment type of picks..

There are always questions, and very few divison 2 guys are ever evaluated coming out of school as potential HOFers. In fact how many guys were even rated this year in your book as potential HOFers; That seems pretty straw man to me.

You play the draft based on what players come of the board. It worked out. Ireland picks a handful of guys he wants, which ever one falls, he likes to trade back and pick up that player. For instance, when we traded away our third, to move up to get THomas, Ireland had in mind the players he could live with taking in the 4th. He had players he wanted. So Maybe he valued Thomas over Gates, so he made that move. Taking a chance on Gates being gone but being happy with another player he also had in mind for the spot. When the stars aligned and Gates slipped it was nobrainer.
The draft is a fluid plan, things change and you adapt, when unexpected things happen. Gates falling to the 4th rd, was unexpected, but we took advantage of it.
For instance Nick Fairley probably wasnt someone detroit was targeting but when he fell to them, they had to take advantage of the value. Same thing probably happened with Gates.
