No one said ANYTHING about a high pick. Stanzi and McElory were still available at the end of the draft. Pat Delvin is still out there. He's ignored it 100%. For what? For this pack of Free agents avaialble?
OK stanzi or McElroy in the 5th or 6th and Delvin as a UFA. Do you think those guys have "franchise' ability? I'm all for taking one of those guys but I don't think the fact that miami didn't means the draft was an utter failure. I think you can take issue with not taking Mallet in the 2d, but beyond that, any other QB would have been a reach, or just a crap shoot low round pick.
I agree with you BNF, we should have taken a QB in this draft. But I think the players we took will be pretty good, and I can see the wisdom in drafting Clay (a TE who was supposed to go much higher and who could help right away) vs passing on Stanzi who more likely than not will never amount to anything.
The upside is we go all in next year for a 1st round QB if we don't get exceptional play out of the position this year (and we won't). If we took Stanzi the team would probably be less inclined to do that while we waited for his "development"
While I'm not as critical of this draft as most are, there is no hiding the fact that we should have taken at least one QB. Early to mid round preferably, but I "get" the Poncey pick and the need to get a RB...so fine, mid round? Late round? NONE AT ALL?
To put all the QB eggs in the Free Agent basket is a BIG mistake. We should have had a draftee in camp, then look for available veterans during PreSeason. A freakin' no-brainer.
And yes, great article Chris!

A number of people think so, yes. I don't think we need to get into successful QBs in the NFL today that were drafted in later rounds...or not drafted at all.
Basically, you can't win the lottery if you don't buy a ticket. Similarly, you can't hit the lotto on a good QB if you don't draft one!

If we get the first pick overall next year and dont draft a QB....The i will seriously think our so called GM is trying to piss on this team on purpose...
It didnt surprise me this year since i read so many negative coments about this crop of QBs in other websites. I sriously thought we were going to draft one this year...But when we did not i wasnt surprised.

David Bueler is the Kicker Bro. Behind Homo , they have Jon Kitna and Chris griesn. He's 34 Yrs old bro. No spring chicken. So I guess you mean Stephen Mcgee......Stats are Not impressive for his 2 game career.
None of the QBs in this year's draft were going to beat out Henne in 2011, or probably in 2012. And none of them are even good bets to become franchise QBs. I thought this was a very weak QB draft class. Phil Simms and Pat Kirwan said the same thing. Simms said he was puzzled at how high these guys were rated. And Kirwan said it may be the most overhyped QB class he could remember. Ireland and Sparano are working to save their careers. They may not be here in two years. So, why waste a pick on an iffy QB prospect who isn't going to play for the next 2 years? Gil Brandt had a stat that of all the first round QBs taken in the first round over the last 20 years, within 5 years, either that QB or the drafting coach is gone 80% of the time.
The Dolphins did the right thing. You don't force yourself to reach for a mediocre QB prospect who is just going to sit on the bench. Who were they going to take? Andy Dalton? The guy has no arm. Colin Kaepernick? He needs tons of work in a lot of areas, including all new mechanics. Ryan Mallett? He has Ryan Leaf written all over him from an attitude/maturity standpoint. And he can't avoid the pass rush at all.
And we're complaining about udnrafted free agents? They can't sign undrafted free agents. No one can. So, who knows. Maybe they are looking at Pat Devlin or Ben Chappell or Adam Weber as long term development projects.

What makes you say that? The only to say that is if you feel Sparano would never have given the drafted QB a chance.
Just watch how many QBs drafted this year start as rookies and see how successful they are. Newton, Gabbert, Ponder...I bet all 3 will start. At least one of those guys will play well.

How about Greg McElroy? Mallett being drafted in the 3rd round is NOT Ryan Leaf, btw (who was drafted #2 overall).

Number one, there is no offseason. Rookie mini-camp should be this weekend. If negotiations drag into July, that means all of the OTAs would have been missed. A rookie QB would have no chance of getting up to speed without any of the offseason programs. The 3 guys you mentioned, they have to start. That's what happens when you draft guys so high. You are forced to play them. Or else you look like idiots. So, I'm sure they will start. And of the 3, Ponder may have the best shot at short term success. But, his lack of arm will doom his long term success. What happens when he has to go through cold weather games, playoff games, in Green Bay or Chicago? They'll find out the same thing the Jets found out with Pennington. If you don't have the arm, you can't get through the cold weather games you need to win. Newton and Gabbert both have way too much to learn coming from non-pro style offenses, and not having to read defenses or go through progressions.
Seriously. Cut the BS. This is NOT the only draft we passed on EVERY QB prospect and yet a few seemingly defend the FACT we treat the QB position like its a leper?
OMG you cannot possible be real??? Do you actually watch NFL games? Do you actually pay attention to the teams that succeed?
Or more specifically, WTF team are YOU rooting for?
Stop defending an ongoing catastrophic mistake. This franchise goes nowhere until we address the QB position like the #1 priority it needs to be!

Yep.
(from the article)
There's a famous quote by Jimmy Johnson that really speaks to how greatness is achieved in the NFL: “Do you want to be safe and good, or do you want to take a chance and be great?”

RIGHT...sure. What about guys that weren't even drafted? How about Kurt Warner?
