Quinn / Mallett / The Draft

It's interesting that while 21 teams chose to pass on Quinn in the 2007 draft; 72 teams chose to pass on Mallett this year. This takes into consideration that every team had at least one chance to draft Mallett, and some teams had three chances to draft him.

Many fans thought Quinn was the man in 2007. He wasn't.

Many fans thought Mallett was the man in 2011. The fact is that all 32 teams did not believe Mallett was worthy of either a 1st or 2nd round pick; and at least 8 teams did not feel he was worthy of taking in round 3. It's also interesting to note that many so-called draft gurus have given the Patriots terrible grades for this draft. They drafted some intriguing players but failed to address their biggest needs. If Brady stays healthy for the next 4 or 5 years, Mallett will have been a wasted pick.

Regarding the Dolphins draft this year, I loved it. There were no bonehead Pat White picks. I felt we addressed our 3 biggest needs (Oline; Fresh legs at RB; and speed at WR). I never thought Henne was our biggest problem last year, and I still don't. If the oline and running game improve, we will be a much better team in 2011.

The pats had a terrible draft. They didn't get one impact player and reached for a lot of players (2 scrub RBs in the 2d round---wouldn't Ingram have made more sense if they wanted to go that way?). Sure they got more picks for next year, but someone needs to tell them that their window is closing rapidly with each passing year as Brady gets older---the time to swing for the fences was this year or last, and instead they are drafting for next year, and added a backup QB who will do nothing for them for years and years, if ever

you think they had a good draft? if we took RBs in the 2d round who were supposed to go in the 4th or 5th (2 of them no less), people would be bashing this team to no end. But b/c it's the pats, no one says anything other than how brilliant Bellichek is for getting more picks next year. I think Bellicheck is in love with his own genius and has long ago past the point of getting too cute with the draft.

Not saying Quinn was the man for the Job. But at the time, We had NO buisness picking a speedy reciever/punt returner when we had so many glaring holes including no QB. Picking a QB like quinn at the time , and failing would have sucked balls, but you can't blame them for trying. That was the right move. Picking Ginn was stupid no matter which way it worked out.

So Quinn would have been a better pick than Ginn? Interesting.

Quinn would have been a better pick than Ginn. In hindsight, they both sucked. But taking Ginn at 9 overall was moronic no matter how you slice it. Picking a QB that had even a 30% chance of success as an NFL starter was the better move. Taking Pat Willis would have been the best move.

It was the right pick at that time.

I would still debate Quinn versus Ginn; however the point of this thread is to say that the Dolphins drafted very well this year; despite the fact that we entered the draft short our 2nd pick - having sent that in a package to get Marshall.

I agree with that. we were able to adquire a second rounder which we didnt have and traded up which tells me the player they picked there they really wanted.

You always trade up in fear of another team snatching a player you really want. Maybe we hit on 3 players drafted. Id be happy with that.

The Pats will find a way to trade Mallet and get something for him. Count on it.

RESPONSE: Who knew Ginn would develop a mental block about catching the ball?

If he hadn't, he would have been a DAMN GOOD pick because it was a thing of beauty to see his speed when he blew away from the defensive secondary........only to drop the ball from his hands.

If Mallett was not considered worth a 3rd round pick by several teams and not worth a 1st or 2nd round pick by any team - do you really think his value will rise sitting behind Brady?

of course. happens all the time. he will come in during mop up duty and complete 8-10 for 100 yards and 2 TDs and we will trade a 1st round pick for him

I know it happens. Cassel and Schaub are a few examples. Mallett would have to dramatically change his reputation for it to happen to him.
