Passing on talent

Here we go again.....safe and another losing season!
We pass on the best running back in the draft and take the 3rd best??!!
We Pass on Mallett....What the heck??
We could have had Ingram and Mallett....that would have been a great draft...period!
The draft is always a crap shoot and you never know what your going to get.....but to pass over the #1 running back and a possible great QB??
People keep saying...."There's got to be a reason they dropped"....Hello MCFly.....Marino 27th, Brady 6th Round....they even said Marino dropped because he had issues.
Stop comparing Mallett with Leaf!!....he may be but he could also be the next Marino, Brady, or Manning...take that chance!
Ingram May be a bust or another Smith, Payton, or Sanders. Until we start drafting like we want to win we will be average for years to come.
For some reason I think of the 89-90 Cowboys....they didn't pass over Aikman and Smith...we may have! Hope this doesn't bite us in the Arsh!confused smiley

A&O.....I admire your fanatacism for our beloved PHINS....but you say we drafted talent....you said that last year and the year before and the year before that and so on and on for many years....it would be better for you take the blinders off and see all the talent we have passed on for many years instead of you claiming that I am crying....or do you honestly believe we have been more than a bust for many years.

NO GUTS NO GLORY....SAME OL STORY! OH Veh.........

We've ALWAYS drafted talent. Problem is, either that talent didn't fit our team, our staff didn't know how to develop the talent, or there just wasn't enough talent for the NFL.

Yeah, everybody was super pissed we picked Koa Misi over Sergia Kindle last year too.

I remember very clearly..."that was stupid, we had Kindle...and we picked a nobody!".

This was not a normal draft for centers. Pouncey was the only guy at the position that carried better than a 4th round grade. And that's based on the grades by both Pro Football Weekly and Mel Kiper. If we wanted a C, Pouncey was the only guy to take.

Daniel Thomas is not flashy, and did not get much pre-draft hype. So, I assume the issue is that people don't know him. But, I listen to Sirius NFL Radio, and Pat Kirwan had him pegged for us for a few weeks now, so I had read a lot about him. He was a consensus top 4 RB in this draft, from every source.

Edmond Gates ran a 4.37 at the combine with a bad hamstring. He had a 40 inch vertical, and 10'11 broad jump. That is an explosive athlete. When you watch the highlights, one thing you notice is that he will fight for contested balls. This is not Ted Ginn. Pro Football Weekly, Mel Kiper, and Bill Parcells all gave him a 3rd round grade. So, he was good value in the 4th round.

Pro Football Weekly gave Charles Clay a 4th round grade, and rated him as the 5th best TE in the draft, ahead of Rob Housler, DJ Williams, Jordan Cameron, and Julius Thomas. Mel Kiper called him "a real good athlete with excellent natural running skills and phenomenal hands," and "a dynamic all-around talent." Pat Kirwan said that he'll also be a threat in the running game as a short yardage specialist.

These were 4 very solid picks. And they all fill major needs. Pouncey will start from day one. Thomas will be the primary running back. Gates will be the 4th WR and kick returner, and he will force safeties off the line of scrimmage. He hasn't returned punts, so that remains to be seen if he fits there. And Clay fills a need for second TE that is a receiving threat. Daboll loves 2 TE and TE/H-Back formations, and Clay will slide right into that. And did you see his highlights of his ability to run after the catch? This is a guy who can create mismatches, and that's what modern NFL offenses are about.

Hopefully, we can get another G in free agency. Carl Nicks? Justin Blaylock? And then how about adding Darren Sproles in free agency as a scatback complement to the power running of Thomas and Hilliard?

D-mark, Sproles or Reggie Bush are the 2 RBs I would target over Deangelo when/if FA starts. And anyone that complains about this draft is just bitching to hear themselves bitch. End of story.

I like reggie bush, but i feel like he is a higher profile version of Ronnie Brown. He is really injury prone.

Having said that i think it would still be worth a look he would be an improvement to our stable of backs, but only for a couple of years.

"It's been fun to get the reaction of visiting coaches to the color of their locker room. Most don't notice it, but those that do are in trouble. . . . When I talk to an opposing coach before a game and he mentions the pink walls, I know I've got him. I can't recall a coach who has stirred up a fuss about the color and then beat us.” Hayden Fry

It's pretty well known that Parcells has an affinity for Darren Sproles. You wonder if that same affinity is shared by Ireland. I think he'd be a perfect addition.

People want Deangelo Williams. But, there are a few reasons why it's not likely to happen. Number one, he's going to demand a 5 year, $25M contract. 5 years for a veteran RB is not a smart business decision. And especially not for a guy who missed 10 games with a foot injury this past season. And if you spend that kind of money on Williams, you are bringing him in to be the featured back. You just traded 3 draft picks to move up to the second round to take Thomas. It is true that you need multiple RBs in this league. But, you can't commit those kind of resources to two of them. Sproles would be a perfect signing to round out the backfield.

What's gotchur panties in a bunch Phinskiss? Which pick/s has you so wound up? I'll try to speculate;

Are you mad that we took the best Center in the draft? (Center by the way being a HUGE need on this team)

Are you mad that we took the 3/4 best RB who happens to be a step faster than the supposed "best" RB? (Every down back by the way being a HUGE need on this team)

Are you mad that we passed on a QB who every team passed on at least twice (some 3 times) and who was alledgedly so hung-over he had to cancel a visit with the Panthers a week ago? Keep in mind, the ONLY team willing to take a flyer on him is a team that doesn't need him and will probably NEVER use him with any regularity (called a luxury pick in case you were wondering)

Are you mad we added a speed WR? (speed WR by the way being a HUGE need on this team)

Are you mad we added a TE/H-back, a TE that some so called "experts" had rated as the 4/5 best TE in the draft? (TE by the way being a HUGE need on this team)

And when you say we always pass on talent, does Jake Long fall into that no-talent category because of who Atlanta picked after us?

I wish we would of gotten a QB also, but what QB other then the saviour Mallett should we of taken and where? I was completely on board with Mallett @ 15 a week or 2 ago until the Carolina story came out, hung-over or not you don't miss such an important meeting as that (and from the other storys out about his partying, it's a pretty good bet he was actualy hung-over)

Clay was projected as a 4th rounder, so we likely could not have got him later. At the time of the pick, Gil Brandt called it an excellent value pick.

dolphaholic....funny how you got your panties in a wad when you said those that didn't like our draft were bitchin for the sake of bitchin....You dont even make sense...."everyone passed on a QB like Mallett 2 or 3 times, we got the best running back in the draft??!!

Do you think rational at all.....Brady was passed up by all teams 5 times or did you forget that??....Wasn't Ingram rated on the board as the best back or was our draft pick rated #1? Funny how you just mention Jake Long from all the draft picks for many years.

Your very Naive as many on this board....you just keep thinking this was such a magical draft by fillin needs.....as many so called Dolphin fans do every year....I will stick with reality and see you at the end of another 7-9 or 8-8 season.....I'm gonna go fill my needs....grab a soda from my Phins soda machine and shoot a game of pool on my Phins pool table....all while bitchin about another lousy draft as I also throw in one of my 400 Phins games on DVD into the PS3 in my Phins gameroom that has 15 Phins jerseys hanging on the walls and ceiling and 4 huge fatheads....Marino, Brown, JT, and ZT....not to mention all the other thousands of things I have invested in my beloved Phins....including the biggest thing - my heart since 1970!! I HAVE THE FRIGGIN RIGHT TO BITCH until this team becomes the Phins again!!....GET IT-GOT IT-GOOD.

Am I supposed to be impressed by you having a fathead?

Just curious also, when 2 of those players whose jersey you have hanging in your shrine were drafted in the 3rd and 5th rnds, were you bitchin about it or did you run right out and buy those jerseys that day? I'm sure you were very excited about 2 undersized relative unknown kids from small schools right?

But Bess was an undrafted FA. You could make the argument that he was part of his draft class.

I'd hesitate to put John Jerry on that list just yet. I don't believe Merling has EVER been a starter. Henne? Uhh, no comment.

What about Ireland's questionable moves during the season?

- Donald Thomas (why just dump him? Could have used the depth)
- Will Allen (IR? He was ready a few games into the season, and we needed the secondary help at that time)
- Jason Allen (how does he go from starter to being cut in just a few games???)
- Charlie Anderson (he was the only legit rushing OLB we had besides Wake. Why cut him??)
- What about all the weird moves at Center (Satele, Grove)
- How about Gibril Wilson? Ernst Wilford? Akin Ayodele? Reggie Torbor?

I'm worried about what Ireland is going to do in the future. He may be decent with draft picks, but his moves, overall, have been questionable.

Those were all done during Bill Parcells reign.

You cant solely put that on Ireland. Those 4 moves (only 4), could have easily been made by Parcells.

I added a few more, but those 4 were complete bonehead moves. We let legit talent go for no real reason. How about all the bizarre moves on special teams? Ireland was playing fantasy football with our roster last season. It was embarrassing.

dolphaholic or just plain dumbaholic.....I could give a rats arsh by what impresses you....your probably young and clueless!!

by the way....its 4 fatheads or cant you read? I guess you cant read because all along I've talked about Ingram and Mallett and you claim I still haven't told you which picks I'm pissed about.....but then again....I better type a little bit slower just for you....like Carlos Mencia said....your probably - DEE DEE DEE. Did I not Mention we took the 3rd best running back and passed on the first, I also posted numerous times that maybe Mallett will be another Leaf but he could be another Marino, Manning or Brady....Hello Mcfly....that's Ingram and Mallett....do I need to type even slower for you??

Talkin out of your arsh again I see....I mention Jerseys for my gameroom and you babble about 3rd and 5th round picks....but to clarify just for you....2 Marino Phins jerseys and one Marino Pitt Jersey, one Bob Griese, Csonka, Warfield, Brown, Williams, McDuffie, Byers, JT, ZT, Chambers, Marshall, Barnett, Henne, and a few others.

I have nothing against anyone on these posts and here's to all of you smileys with beer for being a Phinatic....but when you or anyone says I bitch for the sake of bitchin....I could just do what Machida did to Couture last night because it pisses me off....I bitch because it kills me to see what my beloved Phins have become for so many years....Many want to cry about staying positive while lookin at the Phins through rose colored glasses....OK then....my beloved Phins have POSITIVELY ripped my heart out for sooooooo long now!sad smiley
