There will be a draft, and the money all sides would lose during a lockout far offsets the network money..........there will be football this year, i guarantee it
Frankly my dear, I don't give a dam.
Screw the NFL I'm just as sick of the whingeing from fat cats, players and owners alike, as I am of Politics. Left, Right, Left, Right, Left Right. Maybe they should lesson to themselves and start marching toward reality.
If there IS a draft and no CBA, the draft itself will probably be deemed null and void, as players will not be able to be signed. The CFL and arena football league may see a large influx of talent and revenue for one year!
Ghoti I'm gonna do a little research but I've heard the owners would have to pay the networks back eventually, I'll stake my house on it that there will be football this year, even if there's a lockout March 3rd.
My guess is that the owners have a little more sense than to look at profits for "1" year. Think of it in these terms: The backlash from a work stoppage by fans is palpable. Any fool and his mother can see what a strike did to baseball, and more recently, the killing of the NHL as I knew it. Years later, hockey isn't even close to the fan level it received pre-strike. NFL owners, players, and everyone understand this concept. The money they stand to gain this coming year from networks during a strike pales in comparison to the money they will lose if this dispute goes into a lengthy lockout.
There IS a draft this year. This is an established fact. Like the earth is round. Not open to debate.
There WILL be football this year. People are not that stupid, they will not kill the golden goose. If I am wrong i will need to reevaluate my faith in the basic intelligence of humanity. But I keep having to do that with every passing year, so nothing would shock I guess.

Very well said. All the players are is meat sacks and the fans are revenue sources. And if they get into trouble, we get to pay their way out of it. Don't doubt we will end up on the hook for the stadiums.
He does bring up one interesting point though (maybe one of the Lawyers on here could answer this question). Lets assume a worse case scenario and the lockout drags into Sept/Oct., would the owners be opening themselves up to anti-trust lawsuits from Aprils draft class because they didn't allow them to earn a living at there respective trades in a timely manner. These players wouldn't be part of the NFLPA until they signed their 1st contract one would assume, so they wouldn't be locked out, and no owner in there right mind would sign one of these guys until they knew the future structure of the salary cap and more importantly the much fought for rookie cap. If i'm right about this, I think this pretty much proves the owners aren't serious about a prolonged lockout. Contrary to Ghoti's theory, unless they come out of left field and drop a nuclear type bomb, the draft is happening in April.
I think the real question boils down to who is more financially exposed...is it the players with the lambos and McMansions. Or is it the owners with the stadium payments and assorted infrastructure overhead expenses. My money is the players will cave when the repo man shows up for their lambo.

This is why I think the CFL and AFL will see a large influx of talent. These guys gotta eat!

I am not a laywer but I deal with owners types alot and tons of contracts. I think the owners would address this by signing the players to one year contracts that protect them from whatever unknowns they are worried about. Also as someone else had mentioned. The owners are only drafting the rights in the the NFL to these guys, they could still play somewhere else,(Canadian, Arena) until the NFL season commenced, however long that may be. This typ of scenario happend alot in the early 80's with all of the USFL stuff and top draft picks playing in the other leagues, even though they were drafted in NFL.
Vontae Davis, tweeted the other day that if there is a lockout, he told his agent he wants to play in Canada or Arena...
THe owners signed a TV contract that guarantees, they get paid whether the NFL plays a game or not. They signed a multi year deal that protects them last year. It would be dealt with in the future once playing begins. That deal alone gave the owners the upper hand in the negotiation, I believe the NFLPA tried to fight it, but were unsuccessful. I dont not think it is fair but this is war between the 2 sides and fair doesnt really matter much when these type of dollars are at stake between 2 parties. I think the only way we have football is if the NFLPA bends to demands of the owners while still saving face. I am very encouraged that they are continuing to meet for 7 days straight now, that is a very good sign!
Also Dolphins fans please understand, our team and owner needs a better CBA more then any other team IMO. IF Ross does not get what the owners are looking for he is probably in a busted asset. DO I think our owner is a moron, yes, IS it the players fault he made a bad investment, no.
Will it eventually begin to affect our team in negatives ways if the DOlphins cant become more profitable, absolutley. Does all of MR Ross's, problems go away with a better CBA, most likely. DO I think he deserves it, NO. Do I want to see our team in more jeopardy then it already is, NO. SO the best thing for our team in reality is a CBA that bails out Ross. And this is why I support the owners, not morality, reality..
