Sorry but you got to tell how much longer will this coaching regime be around before I can, in turn, give you an intelligent answer to your question.

I guess I answered it, the answer is when they fire ALL OF THIS REGIME!!!!

With Ireland/Sparano/Henning? Never. On the other hand, if we dumped them? The Jets took 2 years to become a contender.

This team can be a contender in 1-3 years barring another injury plagued...snakebit...can't win at home season like this one.

Fix the offensive line, pick up a good RB, draft a top flight receiver (wish we had Dez Bryant), and this team is at the top of the division.

...oh yeah, and FIRE DAN HENNING!

The jests also had a pretty good defense with some skill players on it when Hambone took over, then he added a couple FA on the defensive side of the ball to make them a top 5 D along with his style of D.

Then they added a QB in the top 5 of the draft.

Thats why they are a contender, not so much what he has done, but as to what he was handed......it was kind of set up for any decent coach to succeed.

The Dolphins could be a playoff team next year, and with the right mix of players could win the division in two years and play in a SB in 3. Nothing magical about what needs to be done--acquire the right players. Our goal would be to...

1. trade Vernon Carey--too slow--for a more athletic veteran RT
2. secure a top 5 Center, if possible, a veteran who has years left
3. trade Ronnie Brown for a top draft choice RB to obtain another top 5 draft choice RB
4. draft another RB to replace Ricky, but keep Ricky on the team for another season or two.
5. drop Channing Crowder or trade him, if possible, and seek a veteran replacement to complement Karlos Dansby
6. secure an athletic TE to alternate with Fasano, or use in double TE set
7. trade Sean Smith and obtain a similar height player with tackling ability.
8. draft a high 2nd Round WR with all the skills
9. 'Lest we forget--select a franchise QB in the draft

Nothing magical? It would be magical to complete even half the items on that list.

colonel: Problem is other teams don't want our garbage.

Ronnie Brown should of been traded 2 years ago when he still had value.
Carey, likewise.
Crowder is the worst of the 3.

Ricky is kind of on his last legs, I dont think he will be here for 2 more years. Maybe 1 more at best.

"Franchise QB"? I suppose you mean someone with the skill level of Manning/Rivers/Brady/Brees? This is kind of difficult to find out there, they definitely don't grow on trees smiling smiley But a new OC and complimentary speedy WR will help what we have here tremendously. Personally, I'd like to see Pennington in the OC job.

Here's what we need as of today for next year:
Offense:

OL (x4) Starters everywhere except LT
OL Depth Two to three decent backups.
WR (x1) 1 Speedy guy to extend the field.
RB (x2) Power/Speed
TE (x1) A run blocking guy---Easy to get
QB (x1) Someone with an Arm AND Vision.
Offensive Coordinator (x1)

Special Teams:

Special Teams Coach/Guru (x1)
Gunner. (x1)

Defense:
DT (x1) Solai is not quite it.
DE (x1) Just one more dominant guy will be fine.
MLB (x1) If we could clone Dansby...
CB (x1) Just someone competent at the position.
SS (x1) Bell is losing it

FS (possibly) I like Jones but he's a little slow of foot.

19 guys away.. sad smiley

Victor--
It's not magical. Setting goals for some is hard, getting there more difficult--neither requires magic. smiling bouncing smiley Magical connotes a fantasy solution. Making those changes, getting those positions filled requires full creative effort. It may take cash ($), trading and cash, giving up a draft pick, trading a player, cash, etc. No wizardry involved. winking smiley

The first thing, IMO, is determine the weakest starter, and the next weakest started and fill those spots. If it takes a trade and cash, for another player, or acquiring a free agent who can do far better than the weak starter--go for it. At what expense? To gain dominance you have to have the people. If your goal is to build a competitive team, you look for quality personnel and bargains if you can get them. If you are building a dynasty you go for the fabric that will grow quickly under the leadership of the best coach around (who isn't already under contract with some other team. (e.g. COWHER)).

What would it take to get COWHER out of the sports booth and coaching Miami? How about a great guaranteed 5 year, 7-figure salary, shares of stock in the company with royalties paid when the stadium is packed, incentives for every win, incentives for points scored, incentives for fewest points allowed, a golden parachute retirement at the expiration of his 5-year contract. Incentives for winning the division, the AFC, and winning the SB. Veto power on draft picks, trades, and acquisitions.

IMO, it's an offer Cowher couldn't refuse. smileys with beer

1. No team would take on Vernon Carey's contract. He is always banged up, and is showing serious issues with pass protection. Our only hope may to move him to guard.

2. This regime gave a $25M contract to Jake Grove to be the C of the future. Doubt they will do that again.

3. Ronnie Brown is a free agent at the end of the year and thus cannot be traded.

4. RB will be a major need this offseason. I'm ok with bringing back Ricky, but they need to play him less. This splitting series is ridiculous. He needs to get 10 touches a game, and be limited to that.

5. They do need to get rid of Crowder, but they like him. He just doesn't have the instincts to be above average. I hope they move on from him, but I get the feeling they won't./

6. The second TE who can run the seam route is a must.

7. Smith may have some value for some team that considered drafting him. Although, he has shown that safety is not going to be an option for him. So, it's going to have to be some team that thinks they can make him into a better corner.

8. Unfortunately, we don't have a 2nd rd pick. And while I agree they need a fast WR to get over the top and loosen the defense, I bet they stay status quo.

9. Chad Henne is the guy. He needs a better supporting cast. People must see that we still have many holes to fill, and our overall talent level will be an issue for any QB to overcome. And if they throw in the towel on Henne, and spend a high pick on a QB, then you have to consider trading away a lot of the veteran contracts, including Dansby and Marshall. You draft a guy in 2011, and you can't realistically expect to be a Super Bowl contender until maybe 2013 or 2014.

This team can be a serious contender as soon as next season...we need to add a new offensive coordinator and a system that is innovative, attcks the defense, speed on offense, playmakers, quality depth and then find a way to limit injuries.

We must be very active in free agency and pay to get the gem players to compensate for our lack of draft picks. Then we must hit with playmakers on our draft picks in the first four rounds.

What's amazing about what everyone says, we need this and that exactly what we said 5 years ago, and we are still so far away. I think we are a million miles away
