is it?

Is our defense really that bad or is it the coaching. I know the players will say they are the ones that have to make the plays, but I believe our coaching is weak. We have got some great players on defense that are not getting to the QB enough. There are not enough different looks. The offense always knows what we are doing. With no pressure, I dont care who the CBs are, they are going to get beat.

The main issue is coaching, but we DO have some personnel issues as well.

Talent-wise, we're soft in the middle of our defense. We're not consistent at NT (when Ferguson is out) and our ILBs need upgrading. We're also not set at FS (Wilson isn't that great and Clemons is a rookie...not sure how good he will end up).

Coaching goes much deeper than play calling.

Coaching should be judged on your ability to get the best out of the talent you have.

1. Once Ronnie was out, moving away from the W/C made sense and finally got done a week too late.

2. So too was the plan to keep JT in the game all game and thus no gas in the 4th. credit again to Sparano for rotating Wake in more and the pressure made the difference in the 4th Qtr.

3. We are however still weak on personnel, especially at WR, and we have at least 6+ players wet behind the ears and growing into their jobs:

Henne, Bess, Hartline, Wake, Vontae davs & Sean Smith ... others too.

The lack of ILB's that are consistent kills our defense. Plain and simple, you get some b+ LB's next year and this defense kills.

Overall, linebacking corps is weak covering pass plays and neutralized most of the time during running plays. Joey Porter and Jason Taylor are dealt with and thwarted most of the time nowadays; the inside linebackers are not run stoppers nor are they capable of handling pass coverage over the middle. I'll bet efforts are made during the off season to employ a free agent or two that can firmly strengthen these porous areas.

I have posted 3 threads criticizing COACHING.

BUT YOU SAID ON DEFENSE.

My criticism of coaching has been on offensive play calling and use of players.

The problem ON DEFENSE is that we don't really have any run stoppers and our secondary is inexperience as far as Davis and incompetent as far as Gabril Wilson.

It's the players first and foremost. As has been said we are weak at LB, S and NT...once the personnel is on the field we can blame the coaches if it isn't getting done.

Coaching makes up for just so much, beyond that it's the players that have to be talented, smart, and disciplined enough to make the plays.

Our players suck on defense for the most part. Gabril Wilson stinks. Jason Taylor is old and washed up (enough with the excuses, we all love JT but lets face reality). Joey Porter STINKS. Cam Wake is still a 1-dimensional player. Our MLB's are average on their best days. Bell isn't anything special by any means.

And while our two rookie corners are very very promising, they are still rookies.

Take away Langford, Starks, and Merling and we have no reliable players on defense.
