If staying at 3, who is your pick? Both legit weapons

I've been pretty quiet on what I think the Phins should do this offseason largely because I haven't developed a strong opinion about it yet, and this offseason seems (to me at least) more difficult to develop an opinion about.

However, one of the things that has been in my mind is the lesser-used alternative for player acquisition - trading. I'm not very high on the free agent WRs available relative to what I think they'll cost us and how they'd fit within what we're trying to do. Though I didn't dedicate any significant time to it, I couldn't think of a WR that might be available by trade who seemingly fits what we're trying to do.

To give credit where it's due, I was listening to the Locked On podcast and the guy made a case for trading for Tyler Lockett. In my opinion, that may be a very wise thing to do. As a player, his experience, production and style seemingly all fit well. He's quick and crafty at getting open and, as 28 TD in the past 3 seasons demonstrate, he's not just a quick-twitch short gain guy...he knows how to score.

I liked how Buffalo got Diggs last year and the results speak for themselves. Both he and Lockett were 2015 draftees and both showed promise in their 1st 3 yrs, but then hit their stride in the last 3. So, I'm not proposing that a trade for Lockett means we don't spend a high pick on WR this year...but that it could significantly help the entire unit, including a talented rookie who may take a couple years to get his sea legs under him.

Seattle barely has any cap room...several important players unsigned...and a lack of high draft picks. I'd be willing to float the #36 or #50 + another lower round pick their way for a proven player who seemingly would fit like a glove. His base salary in this - his last year under contract - is $11M, so we'd want to extend him (for cap management and to keep him under contract in out years).

While I don't think such a move would kill the idea of drafting a WR early, I do think it would lend to greater flexibility, which is always a valuable commodity where the draft is concerned.

Excellent post. I feel the same way about not developing a strong opinion either way. Tough draft. so many options/ ways to go. We have alot of picks/capital. Its actually not a bad problem to have as long as you don't blow it.

Also concerning your statements on the Seattle Cap room.......if I was a Seattle fan I wouldn't be too upset because they got a championship, some great seasons in. But these players all want to get paid huge contracts after a while. Its an issue I dont want us in , however if thats what it takes to win a championship now a days so be it. Top picks in the first round want to be paid upfront big money.

Have seen a lot of Lockett as my son is a Hawks fan. He is a solid receiver their #2 target behind Metcalf. Think I would prefer Allen Robinson in FA and take Chase or Pitts at 3 or if we drop down get Jaylen Waddle or Kedarious Toney

I would trade Parker for him.

I think I'm finally solidifying my position in this draft. Been watching reading alot.......I believe if Miami picks PITTS with thier first pick the tandem of Pitts / Giesicki will terrorize NFL defenses....especially in the Red Zone.

Add to that a huge bruising athletic RB like Harris at #18!?

We will have them coming and going.......

The only way you take Pitts is if you want to make two TE's your base offense.

Either way (Pitts, Smith, Chase, Waddle) we'd have a pretty good and dynamic group. Especially if we can add Harris or Etienne at 18)

Gesicki would be our slowest (Starting) receiver, at 4.54.

Hurns would be the slowest in the entire group at 4.55.

If we could only have the draft fall like this...Smith 3, Waddle 18, Etienne 36. We'd have speedy playmakers and homerun hitters all over the place.

Not the base offense......but would be killer in the Red zone!!And soften up defense for the running game. I thin TUA is accurate enough to hit them in stride over the middle and in the corners. Its been Bradys bread and butter for yrs.

I don't know that Waddle will last until 18, but I do think there's a fair chance that we trade down a bit (6-8 range) and still have a chance at Smith...plus ammo to move a bit if needed to get Waddle. I'm not necessarily in favor of adding both Smith & Waddle, but was thinking about how it could happen. However, the idea of having Fuller take the top off the D and create space for everyone else + Parker & Williams being the big, physical matchups + Waddle & Smith being the twitchy guys who can create and maintain separation would give our WR corps alone a ton of dynamism. Not to mention Gisecki and Etienne would both be dynamic at their positions. Definitely not saying it would be a bad idea.

My Ultimate draft scenario

Draft back to # 8.

Pick up another 2nd rounder and possibly a #1 next year.

Pick PITTS at #8 (If available) Probably wont last

Patrick Surtain II at #18 (remember the other teams in our division we need to STOP Buffalo )

Second Round:

Najee Harris (We have speed at the RB position already, we need a 3rd down bruiser...hes huge and athletic at 6'2" 235)

Rashod Bateman So many of you want these speedy receivers that are not even 6 feet tall. I think thats a mistake. This team needs to get bigger and stronger not faster.

Best Olineman available



That makes us an instantly better team and better all around in the passing game, running, and upgrades the Cornerback to possibly the best tandem with Howard since the glory days of Madison and Surtain I. You want to beat Buffalo twice a season? You want to beat the Chiefs? You want to take out Brady/Gronk and the Bucs? Upgrade that other corner.

TCPF used to lean toward dropping down hoping lions at 7 or Panthers at 8 but the more I see Pitts we would have to take him at 3 and think we should. He is a beast matchup nightmare

Did we really? How did Rowe do against Buffalo? The Chiefs? He got raped .Do you do any research? Do you know anything about how the NFL is played?

Our defense was much improved yes... hardly best in anything as evidenced by the lack of any playoff games.

1. Offense 123 and out.

2. Defense was tired.

Very easy to understand.

Sam..... I agree that if the offense can stay on the field longer it will help the defense.

Everyone here may not agree with me but I did not think we were a 10 and 6 team last year, we won a few games we should not have. We have many holes. The offense was offensive. We need a #1 receiver, a good productive running back, better line play and much more from Tua.

Defensive scoring against was great, but they did give up a ton of yards and time on the clock. Better edge rusher, a linebacker and safety are needed.

I do like what we have done with free agency (even the flop at OT from the Titans was worth a try for me)

Someone clue me in on Pitts. I see his numbers. Is he really a TE or a guy that plays TE but could also be a WR. Don't know much about him other that the hype.

In my dream scenario, we trade down a few spots and still get the guy we wanted at three. For me its Chase, Pitts and Sewell in that order.

We do need to address the offense first, thats where our biggest deficiencies were.

We had to have the weakest set of wide outs in the league.

Our rbs did ok but we need someone there to dominate...

PLUS TCPF imagine been a defensive player and knowing your offense is weak and isnt scoring much.

You will not play as hard as you should.

Really its that simple? How we have gone 47 yrs without a superbowl is amazing. Funny.......Howard , Obgah, Van Ginkel never looked tired? Rowe is a converted safety not a shutdown CB. Hes average but gets raped against better teams. Surtain is going to be special like his Dad. Reports have him as even better.

That has to be the weakest argument you have made.

You like Only QB's and bomb throwers and receivers. That's all you care about. You think there are only 2 positions in the NFL. Those two and they can ONLY be found in the first round. All QB's and receivers found elsewhere suck.

Lots more to that in the NFL. 2 sides of the ball and we wouldn't have been anywhere close to 10-6 without good defense. We shouldn't let a player like Surtain go to another team so he can rape your receiver pick.
