Devonte Smith made a heck of a statement tonight .....
Date: January 11, 2021 09:09PM

Smith finished with 12 catches for 215 yards and three touchdowns. And he only played 2 quarters!

Having some great conversations with my boys on the #3 pick in the draft. They are both dead set on reciever Devonte Smith. Even before he won the Heisman, they touted giving Tua a cant miss target like Smith.

Just having the #3 overall pick and the ability to draft either one of these incredible players is beyond exciting.
What direction will our front office make?

One thing I'm confident is that either player makes us instantly better . I'm a little worried about future contracts such players could demand but I guess thats the NFL in 2021.I guess practicality still has me leaning towards Sewell....but I'm out voted 2 to 1 in my household. Both my boys still have Jarvis Laundry Jerseys and point to his performance against the Steelers Saturday night.

Going to be an interesting off season. thumbs up
Maybe its time to stop thinking so conservatively? It was fun watching Smith just score, score ,score.......

But TUA made it look easy until he came to the NFL also. My boys say no. Devonte Smith is going to be the biggest star in professional football.

Time for me to start listening to them? I can still remember teaching them about football , how its played , and tonight they were making really good arguments on why Devonte Smith should be our #3 pick.

I'm not convinced yet, but we are almost in a cant lose position either way we go. Thats a good spot to be in.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

Amazing performance solidifies his pick as the Heisman Trophy winner. Incredible how he moves so fluidly and gets free of coverage. The team that drafts him will be thrilled that they did.

I have to wonder where Fields will go; he was predicted at #2 behind Lawrence.

samsam3738..... not sure what stats you are looking at but devonta smith is 6'1' 179 lbs... jerry rice was 6'2" 200 lbs.... not saying smith won't be good but he is smallish in frame

Hes not huge. Far from it. But maybe one of the most athletic I've seen in a long time. College backs had no chance covering him. He bullied them with just explosive speed. Made his QB look good. Made it easy for him to just throw his way. Uncoverable at the college level.

NFL it could be different. But Devonte looked amazing. He did leave the game with a hand injury , he probably needs to add 10 pounds at the NFL level just to be able to push off the line but once open he looked as fast as Ive ever seen.

Sewell is the smart choice. He will anchor the line for a decade. Has the mindset and work ethic to make the whole line instantly better.

Good to have options I guess!

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

If the dolphins front office doesnt reunite devonta smith with tua there is going to be controversy.

Tua must be licking his chops thinking about reuniting with one of his xteamated in alabama.

We are lucky to have the 3rd spot in the 1st round.

Do you imagine for a second deshaun watson and devonta smith in the same team...with the texans?

That would spell disaster for opposing defenses.

Maybe smith is tuas saviour.

I guarantee you that long pass that tiny @ss piece of crap receiver he so meaningless i forgot his name....the pass he dropped right in his hands...would had been 100 percent a td if dsmith is the receiver...

Tua can definetely throw deep...on that play remember the announcer saying....dam i didnt know tua could throw it that deep.

Trust me folks tua has a good arm...he just had no receivers other than gesicky and an injured parker.

I saw tua in alabama many times. Again he can definetely throw deep.

Maybe we need a receiver like oronde gadsgen.

Tall 6'2 fat 250 lb receiver who barely got open...but dan just threw a fastball his way and oronde just found a way to grab that football.

Best hands ive ever seen.

I am glad someone posted about if we don't pick someone there will be controversy. That is what is wrong with a lot of the picks in the first place.

"Tank for Tua".... if we didn't pick him south Florida would have gone nuts, but we would have taken Herbert and we saw what he can do.

Lets pick Smith over Chase simply because he went to Alabama. Foolish thought process. Heck they may not even like each other nor had worked together much because of how low Smith was on the depth chart when Tua was there.

While this might be true , on paper....but is he the best for TUA and the Dolphins? Can't see him not being , but This is why we need a New OC first. Huge impact on how everything else fits.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

I do think Chase and Smith are close. Chase was the best receiver in 2019 9he sat out this year), Smith the best in 2020

Ja'Marr Chase*, WR, LSU
Height: 6-1. Weight: 200.
Projected 40 Time: 4.4.

DeVonta Smith, WR, Alabama
Height: 6-1. Weight: 175.
Projected 40 Time: 4.45.

Jaylen Waddle*, WR, Alabama
Height: 5-10. Weight: 182.
Projected 40 Time: 4.45.

Here are the stats. Chase weighs more and is faster and is known to actually block downfield.

Not saying that Smith won't be good, but I am not jumping on the band wagon because he is the new shiny penny. It is a good debate.

One more thing about WR's, If I think two receivers are close I would always draft the one with the best hands (ie Jarvis Landry - he could catch everything near him)

That being stated, I really have not idea how good either of those two players hands are and the number of drops

Great points Astro. Drops were another big issue this season. TUA had a number a great throws dropped. So did Ryan Fitzpatrick.

So I decided to do some comparison on Ja'Marr Chase and Devonte Smith

Devonte Smith (Nov 14, 1998 -22 years old)
Last season stats - Heisman winner - Senior season
117 rec
1856 yds
15.9 ave
23 tds

Ja'Marr Chase (March 1, 2000 - 20 years old)
2019 Season stats - Biletnikoff Winner - Sophomore season
84 rec
1780 yds
21.2 ave
20 tds

Both are the same height , Chase is faster and 20 lbs heavier.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. If I had to draft one of them at #3 it would be Chase

More stats for those who like information.

Jaylen Waddle stats until he got hurt
(fyi Nov 25, 1998 - 22 years old...5'10" 183 lbs)
25 rec
587 yds
23.48 ave
4 td

Devonte Smith
Stats until Waddle got hurt
38 rec
483 yds
12.7 ave
4 td
After injury to Waddle
79 rec
1373 yds
17.4 ave
19 td

These stats prove Waddle is the more explosive player in comparing the two Alabama players.

I understand that Smith is the shiny new penny everyone is talking about but the stats don't lie.

AND......he is very light (170 lbs). Would he be able to hold up in the NFL?

Waddle is the closest thing to Tyrek Hill that we can get. I'd love to have him at #3. But I wouldn't scoff at Smith or Chase (he's just too much like Parker to me though) either. My pick at #18 would be Harris all day long.

I'm still sticking with Sewell at #3. Best receiver available at #18

Running back....... best defensive person Linebacker / safety available in the second round.

BUT if it went down with Devonte smith / Harris in the the 1st round I wouldn't be crying in my cereal. smileys with beer

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

Problem is if we want to truly compete and beat the KC's, Buf's, GB's, TB's of the league we need PLAYMAKERS EVERYWHERE and SPEED on our roster. I'm not saying we don't need better line play because we do but playmakers is where it's at in todays NFL.

True. Its what makes this sport so great. Its truly a giant living breathing Chess game. So many ways to attack .

We got smoked by Buffalo. But we gave the Chiefs a run for thier money. Why play competively one week against the Superbowl Champs and lose so horribly to a team the chiefs dominated?

Match ups. Strengths weaknesses , you need to list them and prioritize.

I think we have a major problem at CB. Rowe just can't handle bigger recievers and gets raped . I think that's a priority going forward.

On Offense great points are made for reciever , RB and Oline

Prioritizing the Offense IMO....Reciever is probably the #1 issue. Parker can't do it all. And he's getting double coverage . BUT rarely does a talent like Sewell come up.
He would cement that side of the Oline.
RB ....I actually think we have some talented players. The Oline would make them improve nicely. But getting a RB in the 2nd round couldn't hurt. Especially if Harris is still there .

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

My recollection is that he did really well at basically taking away TE's until he lined up against the elite ones on our schedule (Kelce, Waller)...and then he did get abused, as did so many other DBs who lined up against them.

At $5M/yr, we're getting about what we pay for there. Are you thinking the upgrade might need to come from FA/Draft? Or already on the team (i.e. release him, save $4M, let - say - Brandon Jones step up)?

Funny you should ask.....

Patrick Surtain II*, CB, Alabama
Height: 6-2. Weight: 203.
Projected 40 Time: 4.52.
Projected Round (2021): 1-2

If he's around when we pick round 2 second pick we should make his Daddy proud and make him a Dolphin!!

Surtain Sr. was one of my favorite players and it sucked to see him go to KC later in his career. Our 2nd 2nd would seemingly be really good value for Jr. (and match the round in which we picked Sr. so many yrs ago)

A CB like him could easily make us a better team and take away big plays for opposing offenses.
