Buffalo v. Miami: Game Day Thread
Posted by: colonel ()
Date: September 19, 2020 09:11AM

Game #2 of the 2020 season will be played in South Florida as our Dolphins host the Bills at 1 pm.

There's been a week to recover from last week's miscues and to try and get both the defense and offense to synchronize. Lots of young talent and rookies to watch and hopefully things will begin to gel making the Bills game exciting to watch. I will tune in as I did last Sunday and will post a little more as the game progresses.

Come and participate, maybe we can all get back into the swing of things. NFL Football may still be good entertainment for the weary.

Go Dolphins! Play hard; play to win. Keep your wits about you.

Disapline. This team was lacking a ton. Id like to see less penalties and more plays. Offense was definitely missing a step. Hope they get it together.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

What do you expected last week. No pre season and no film to watch and prepare for the pats game. They do a lot of misdirrection plays. Its very hard to guard something you havent seen. Newton while he is a showoff and i dont like that grin on his face....but he is a very good player and always gives us fits even when he was on the panthers team.

Man to man coverage isn't able to stay with Bills' receivers. They march down the long field to score.

Coverage watching now by me. That's the only coverage worth mentioning as the Dolphins can't seem to cover receivers. Defensive play is haphazard, very uncoordinated effort IMO.

I know it's still early in the season but golly these guys up front don't seem to be with the program, offense or defense. Maybe better and some adjustments at half time. Maybe....

Sanders kicks a 52 yard field goal as we go into half-time. Let's hope adjustments are made offensively and defensively so we can be competitive. We are still in the game....

The secondary, supposed to be good, maybe good, but they still look pretty rag-tag to me

Allen was laying the ball just right and his receivers were getting space to catch the ball. Weak coverage. Plenty of work needed to get our secondary players in the game mentally. They appear to be a step or two off...could be a lack of playing time, general experience and lack of confidence to be more fluid in defending.

We have a short week to improve. Jaguars are next.

The defense allowed 524 yards of offense. Yikes.

Colonel - I was thinking the same thing re: the mental side and being a step or 2 off. Kept telling my son as we were watching together "they're just not in sync...they're off".

To me, this is a coaching issue. Obviously, things were exacerbated by Jones' injury, as they picked on Noah with Diggs all game long. But, more generally, they didn't have answers for what the announcers kept pointing out - that the Bills were getting chunks of yards on these deeper crossing routes. I know we have more talent on D than to allow the results we are thru 2 weeks. I have grace given no offseason, new coordinator, 1/2 starting lineup is new...but that grace probably doesn't extend much more than the first 3-4 games, and even that may be generous.

Some specifics that jump out:
- tackling has not been good
- we haven't demonstrated that we can create pressure via scheme
- Baker may be athletic, but he doesn't seem to be in the right position to make plays very often
- not very impressed with how Godchaux is playing the run

I'm anxious to see what we do against a team that doesn't have a big, strong running qb.

IMO, the step or two off or out of synch, is probably attributable to being uncomfortable with themselves in what they can do or can't do, and that falls under confidence. If they think they can't cover 1 on 1, then they won't do well. If they aren't mentally on the same approach to defense as their coach has laid out, that too is a confidence problem with the coaches game plan. Having trust in the game plan speaks volumes on performance.

Not only did I see an inability to cover closely to the Bills receivers, there was a tentative reaction, an "I'm not sure about this" reaction.

Adjustments are needed when a top guy falls. Someone needs to step up to the challenge. That is something the coaches need to evaluate too. If they see lots of inexperience with a player who will be taken advantage of for one of the reasons abovementioned, then, the next best solution is necessary. What I am referring to is switching Howard's coverage. He's supposed to be first rate, so why didn't the secondary coach switch him to the Bills' best receiver who caught passes with ease all day long? IMO this adjustment should have been made and may have disrupted things for the Bills.

We can only hope that Thursday's game with the Jaguars will show an improvement over the out of synch aspect we're seeing (or, at least cutting back on it).
