Chiefs give Mahomes largest contract in Sports History.........

WORTH UP TO $503 Million over 10 yrs. eye popping smiley

The first player in league history to win league and Super Bowl MVP honors before his 25th birthday, has come to terms on a 10-year deal with the Chiefs, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The contract is reportedly the richest deal in NFL history. Also, per Schefter, Mahomes' 10-year extension is worth $477 million (and can reach up to $503 million) with a $141.48 million injury guarantee. CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports Mahomes' 10-year extension will be guided by a mechanism that ensures the quarterback's annual salary never drops below certain cap thresholds -- in other words, it will always be above a certain percentage of the NFL's salary cap.

500 mill goes to the most important
Position on a football team. The chiefs agree with me.

I see you speechless now. Whats the matter you got no other twist parragraphs about the defense and running game being more important than the qb position?

THE END! smiling smiley

Lol.

I never said anything was more important then the other. My favorite Dolphin is Zack Thomas for a reason. Defense is a personal preference. A good defense can score as well.

But if you spend $50 million on any one player for the next 10 yrs is obscene and sickening IMO. Olineman, RBs and defenders will have to be resigned. You made it very hard to keep a great product in the future. Enjoy your 1 sided view of the sport. I like to see 3D.

My question is whether this represents the new norm for QBs who are generally regarded as elite, or if this is a reflection of Mahomes being THE elite QB of this time with no one else even having valid claim to be in the same stratosphere.

The Chiefs have allocated about 25% of the current cap to Mahomes with the very real possibility of the cap going down next year. I can't remember where I read it, but there is a stat for how no team has ever won a Super Bowl when the QB consumes higher than a certain percentage of the overall cap. I wish I could find it again to see what the details were, but the overall point is pretty common sense: that paying a QB elite money makes it incredibly difficult to build the team around them that ultimately leads to SB wins.

I don't begrudge anyone getting the maximum compensation they're able to...nor in saying this am I trying to unfairly diminish (they've done enough themselves to tarnish their legacy that I don't have to) what Belicheck and Brady have achieved. But, their achievement was certainly helped by Brady's willingness to be compensated at a below-market rate. I had genuinely wondered if Mahomes might have been the trend re-setter by following Brady's lead in sacrificing personal compensation for a better chance at more winning. That said, as interesting as the Mahomes news is...I'm thinking it will be even more interesting to see what now happens with Watson, Prescott and Lamar Jackson.

Very very well said.

It's like a police officer or a Plumber buying a Ferrari. Ultimately you could probably afford the payments......but does it leave room for anything else in your budget? Better off buying that Chevy that will get you there , but wont bankrupt you.

He'll be traded in a few years. That's unless they they surround him with a team that's on rookie contracts for the next ten years.

Re: Chiefs give Mahomes largest contract in Sports History.........

Who would accept that Trade?!
Only why out of it is to cut him....and that dead cap space will haunt them for a decade. No one is worth that money. Mahomes agent must be laughing himself to sleep every night.

If this is the future of superstar franchise QBs.....I hope TUA is just adequate. Because it takes a Team to win a Superbowl. And with 500million $$$$ contracts you wont be able to build one under the cap.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

I hope tua is a superstar. You cannot win with just adecuate qbs like tannehill. Yes maybe a couple teams won it with qbs like tannehill. But thr odds are you will not. Tannehill stay in south florida phins is proof of that.

So you want Miami straddled with a $50 million $ a year salary cap hit for one player? Do you want a winning team or just a Superstar QB?

(Did I just ask the Guy who is already looking forward to the 2021 draft and pushing for a #1 QB this? )

This $50 million a year salary is going to hurt the sport. If I had the #1 pick in the draft and there was a Lawrence sitting there I'd look to trade that pick if he's going to eventually seek $50 Million per season.

No one player wins a Superbowl ever and the Chiefs just guaranteed a great career but most likely Mahommes will never see a Superbowl again. This is exactly what the Salary cap was trying to PREVENT.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

Guarantee you tanni the wet firecracker will never win a superbowl unless the titans defense and running game plays lights out.

He dont have what it takes to make a great play in the 4th quarter and win a superbowl.

He is crap.

Had it been maholmes on the titans...the titans would be holding trophy right now.

But nooooo....the wet firecracker had to be the titans qb.

Did you see that run by maholmes.

If it would had been the wet firecracker he would had deered in the headlights and gotten sacked.
