Why are they talking about cutting Albert and not trading him? Im thinking with teams allowed to trade compensatory picks this year we could get something for him.

The reports are that Miami is releasing Brand Albert. Initially I was thinking that Miami would keep him because they would need another guard, but the further I thought about given that Tunsil is a starting caliber LT, it essential mean by Keep BA we would have an extra $10.6M tied in a OL. BA is due $8.9M this year and with cap savings of $7.2M, that money could easily be used to pay for another G and then some. Next year it would have been 9.6M salary/$11.3M cap hit.

It's a good move. I mean I have no way of knowing who / if they have their eyes on anyone to replace Tunsil at guard, but LT needs to take over the tackle spot. The team needs to cut the cap hit, and move on with continuing to improve the line for the long term. Bushrod is getting a little long in the tooth too. That money, and anything we can get from him through trade, will go a long way in improving our run defense.

Salguero is saying that the Phins are talking to the Jags about a trade for Julius Thomas.

They'd prefer a pick but would take a player too.

You get your TE for a guy they were going to cut and save 1.8 in cap space. If Thomas sucks we have no cap hit if we cut him after a year.

I looked up Julius Thomas's contract and it sucks. Even with Jags eating the signing bonus portion (3.6M), its 7m (3m guarenteed) for 2017, 8.5m 2018 and 9m for 2019. After 2 bad year their is no way TE would command a 3year / 24.5m contract. Even if you look at is at the contact as year to year 1 year $7m is too high for a prove it type contract. Even if he plays at pro bowl level the remaining years are still too high. I would rather have a draft pick.

I'm a bit confused why we would trade for Thomas. My understanding is that he's not worth his current contract to the Jags and they intended to release him. And, has he really done anything in JAX to merit trading for his production & contract? Last year he started 6 games and only played in 9 due to injury. Only way this makes sense is:
- medical staff convinced he is or can come back to 100% prior to season start
- competition for his services on the FA market would be intense and drive his price high anyway

If either of those aren't true, then trading for him not a great move.

HOWEVER - impossible to overlook that when we was playing under Gase in DEN it was 12 TDs, something we haven't seen from a TE.

It wasn't guaranteed that Jax was going to release him this year. jax did pickup his contract on 2/10/17 rather than buy him out. I am OK with trading a 7th round pick for Julian Thomas if his current contract is reduced.

I'm good with it because 2 other teams were pursuing him and he picked the phins to reunite with coach Gase. He is going to take a prove it restructure loaded with incentives.

It's been a verrrrrrrry long time since a player chose the phins because of the coach.

Giving up a 7th is nothing.

Yep - for a 7th, I'm on board draft pick wise...still hoping there's some restructure in the contract. And definitely want medical staff turning over every rock.

This years LT free agent market was petty active and many marginal players got large contract. I wonder if Miami played their cards a little too with trading Albert for a 7th in 2018.

Maybe, dgoodhue, but with Albert's age and injury history (when was the last time he played a 16-game season?), I don't think Miami would have done any better by waiting. It's possible they may not have been able to get anything if they waited.
