Whatever happened to the FB position?

I've been thinking about that 4th-and-inches we attempted in the 1st quarter against Seattle. I remember when we used to have Lousaka Polite. Sure he was slow, but that guy was a guaranteed 1-2 yards every time he touched the ball. If we had a player like that, then going on 4th-and-inches would be a no-brainer. It seems that even in today's NFL...even if that guy was only used in short yardage situations...there is still value in having that massive bruising back for times just like that.

One of the major knocks on this O-Line is run blocking, but where's the FB to lead the RB? That's how we used to play. The O-Line would push the D-Line and make a hole, and the FB would take out the LB. Without that FB we're one man short on any inside runs.

I feel like we've abandoned the position (heck, most teams in the NFL have). We're a team that had one of the best FBs in the history of football (Csonka), and yet we no longer even have a FB. I really don't see us developing an inside running game without one.

Unfortunately when the NFL went to the all passing league, the FB position seems to have been one of the casualties. At the rate the NFL is going, we'll eventually have a QB and 10 receivers on offense.

Agreed (unfortunately) smileys with beer

Yeah, abut an all passing league is a figure of speech more than a precise accuracy. For all practical purposes it's a passing league but the run is still necessary....particularly for 4th and inches...particularly at the goal line.

I remember watching a game where Christian Okoye annihilated Miami. Always wondered why we never learned from that game.
