And who would have been left at that point? Every team has filled their vacancies and it's a week before the Conference championships. We would have been picking over the re-tread trash heap for a HC.

Maybe so but at least we didn't have to hire option 4B this time. He got his number 1 choice.

I only saw 1 guy that was arguably a better candidate. That was Hue Jackson. I was miffed when Miami hired Gase before they even interviewed Hue but what are ya gonna do?

Cle: Hue Jackson

NYG: Ben McAdoo.

Ten: Mike Mularkey

SF: Chip Kelly

TB: Dirk Koetter

There is the field of competition. Every other team passed on...

Teryl Austin, Darrell Bevell, Harold Goodwin, Todd Haley, Anthony Lynn, Mike Smith, Doug Marrone, Josh McDaniels, Sean McDermott, Matt Patricia, Jim Schwartz, Mike Shanahan, Mike Shula, Pat Shurmur and every single college head coach.

Why? I have no clue. Be thankful we don't have Tennessee's ownership. Mike Mularkey? Really?

Most are re-treads or long time assistants that always get turned down for whatever reason.

The only saving grace I can think of is that Tannenbaum DOES have the connections from his relationship with his "former" company that represents coaches. He is privy to SOME inside info.

None of the other HC-less teams waited, either.

I can't recall any team ever waiting until after the Super Bowl.

There's no guarantee that any of those assistants will make good/great HCs, either.

The best thing I have read about GASE is that he doesn't have a "system". He looks at the players and designs the plays and strategies to meet the skill set of the player.

Whether it was Sherman or Lazor, they each had their "system". Even on defense, Coyle cut the number of plays way down because the players weren't getting his "system".

I am optimistic that the new coaching staff is going to find ways to better utilize and maximize the talent on the team.

That might be the key to been successfull.

Looks like years before they tried the complete opposite of that and it did not work.

Might work with tannehill.

Not to be a debbie downer but every coach says they'll coach to the talent on the team.

When did Joe Philbin ever say that? More importantly, when did he OR any of his staff ever do that?

you're splitting hairs, joe.

lazor said the same thing. we'll see what ryan does best and put him in a position to succeed. they developed a system around throws he was comfortable with.

And for the record, I'm not saying Gase is going to be the next great coach. That remains to be seen.

I am just pointing out that he has actually had success in making players better AND has a reputation for teaching. No matter if the were already All pro players or just learning. The players improved. I was skeptical at first mostly because of the media hype turning an average season by Cutler into an all pro.

The same media is now bashing Gase by comparing the Bear's offense before Gase (with Trestman) and after. They were pretty equal in production in 2014 & 15.

The part they leave out is that Trestman had Brandon Marshall. Gase did not. Trestman had a healthy All pro RB in Matt Forte. Gase did not. Gase also was without his #1 WR (Jeffrey) for half the season, Martellus Bennett for 5 games and his #2 WR for 7 games.

He HAS modified the offensive system to suit the strengths of his players. Not just talked about it.

There is a good article in the New York Times dated February 1, 2014 about Gase. I was unable to provide link.

I'm splitting hairs?

I asked "when did Philbin say it" AND when did he DO it? You're only responding to half of what I wrote.

Philbin and Lazor may have inferred the same thing in a round about sort of way. The point I am making is that it was all talk because neither had EVER implemented it in real time or with any player.

Philbin went from Favre to Rodgers? Two similar mobile QB's that ran the WCO.

Lazor was a QB coach who stole from Chip Kelly's playbook and implemented that system to Miami and Ryan Tannehill.

Did either adapt or play to strengths of the players? Ask Lamar Miller that question.

If they were playing to strengths, they would have run the ball 50% of the time with a RB who led the league in yards per attempt for two years.

Both coaches scaled back the Tannehill runs and read option and didn't let him run. Is that adapting to the player?

Neither let Tannehill air it out on deep passes. That didn't happen until Campbell told him to go for it. What happened? He got much better in deep passing and was hitting deep passes every game. He was among the tops in deep passing this year.

Their idea of an aggressive passing attack was to throw bubble screens 15 times a game, throw 5 yards passes on 3rd and long and make their ProBowl TE pass block all day long.

That's why they are back to being position coaches again.

Gase, at least has a record of diversity in the way he used different types of players. It's not JUST TALK.

Hey Joe, I wasn't trying to accuse you of anything and no one knows how gase will do.

Even though I would have preferred Coughlin I do like that Gase and Christenson are good with QBs. So if Tannehill doesn't work out they should be able to ID a capable replacement.

I do think our new NFL experienced staff will help every position, not just the QB. We aren't one offseason away from the playoffs so I'd like to see us get a QB in the 2nd-4th for some legit competition.

I know. I was just clarifying. I completely agree on all points. I am rethinking my stance on Coughlin though. I think I'd rather take a shot at a potential future great coach than bank on one that will just retire in a few years.
