Does Philbin strike you as the type of guy who is going to change how he calls a game just because its a meaningless game??

Ross is a buffoon with a toy. So you might as well go to the millions of children across the nation and ask them to give up their favorite toy as to ask Ross to change his mind about Philbin.

Unless Ross finds Philbin in bed with Ross's wife, he's not gonna change.

If it were anybody else, I'd say that Ross was just giving Philbin the dignity to finish out the season without questions but Ross is truly an idiot as BNF has been saying all along.

You guy's kill me. The reason this even a game is the complete and total inability of the defense to stop smith and decker. Our offense has done its job.

Yeah, but for the coaching timeouts called against Aaron Rodgers on his final drive and taking off the pressure to allow Matt Stafford to complete his final drive we would be comfortably in the playoffs and looking ahead to next week or whenever the playoffs start.

Not aruging those points.

But, if not for the complete defensive meltdowns in the last seven games...mostly on Coyle, the players playing poorly and injuries we'd be comfortably in the playoffs as well.

IMHO Injuries to key players, Coyle's poor schemes, his lack of aggression and general mismanagement, and multiple player mistakes. I.E. poor tackling, poor angles, etc. outweigh Philbin's gaffes.

None of this however excuses Philbin's mistakes.

Facts are...plenty of blame to go around. No one is clean, not even us fans.

What if things click for Philbin next year and he gets them to the playoffs?

I'm not saying he will, but quite a few coaches that should have been fired and weren't, were finally able to prove themselves and have reached the playoffs (Garret as an example).

Philbin will, no doubt, have a difficult time of it. When the year first started, there were only a few holes that needed patching. Now? As The Truth labeled one of his posts, a major "Purge" must take place. Don't know if Philbin can win with a bunch of new players, and probably a new DC with a new scheme.

Ross jumped the gun on making his announcement.

How so? Shouldn't have made the announcement until after yesterday's game.

You going to tell me Ross is happy with the results since Philbin has been the head guy? I believe his record is 24-26, isn't it?

With all the inconsistency this year (and the prior years), then having the lowly Jets with their lower-tear QB rip them apart, Ross is OK with that?

You truly believe Ross would have made the same decision? By making the announcement when he did, he is now stuck with that decision. No way he would embarrass himself by reneging, although I wouldn't have had a problem with it. I want a winner and Philbin did not deliver (especially with all the money that was being shelled out).

It SHOULD have been a close call for Ross.

I didn't say he was happy. But he's not pissed either.

How much consistency are you going to have by blowing up the staff and forcing your QB to learn a 3rd offense in 3 years?

I don't think there's any question he was firm in his decision. Logically, if he'd been on the fence he'd have waited. Logically, if the Jets game factored into his ultimate decision in a positive or negative way, he would have waited.

he didn't wait. So clearly the Jets game didn't factor into his process.

>
> It SHOULD have been a close call for Ross.

Its smart because he announced it after a win.

He'd already made up his mind. He wasn't waiting to see what happened this week. He didn't care.

Owners aren't usually as reactionary as fans and successful businessmen don't usually waffle on their decisions.

He made up his mind that he wasn't firing Joe. He then chose to announce it after a nice win.

If he'd waited it would have been a lot crazier doing it after an embarrassing loss.

Announcing it last week was smart on his part.

Knowing what was out there, he obviously weighed the opinions of his consultants (including Marino) and made a decision. Ross is not as dumb as some would like to believe.

Who is available that would have been a clear cut better HC weighing that he would have blown up the entire team and staff.

A bunch of unknowns and prior failures.

You know there was a saying about the third Roman Emperor, Gaius. He was better known by his nickname, Caligula.

When he was young, he lived underneath the thumb of the Second Emperor, Tiberius. Caligula was the youngest son of Germanicus, who had been everyone's favorite to succeed Augustus, the first Emperor. But one by one, after Germanicus died in a foreign war, Tiberius began killing the older sons of Germanicus....but Caligula played it cool, was servile, accommodating, and comforting to Tiberius right up to the moment that Tiberius was dying on his death bed and Caligula had him strangled by Tiberius's chief general, who had switched allegiances.

So the servile, slavish, and "Uncle Tom-ish" Caligula became ruler of Rome.

And most of you know what kind of ruler he was.

But the phrase that brings him to mind today was what people said of Caligula when they thought of his past, "Never was there a better slave or a worst Master."

I kinda think that puts me in the mind of Philbin to Ross.

Philbin has kissed so much Ross ass that he will be here forever.

No it isn't...but Coyle and his defense is the chief archetect of our demise. Facts are, the best managers and leaders allow thier underlings to actually do thier jobs...without micro-managing them.

As I've said many times now, there is enough blame to go around and Philbin is not blameless in the equation. However, Coyle is the most culpable.

Sounds like Philbin is actually thinking about firing Coyle. It gives me hope.

It worked last year when he fired Sherman in favor of Lazor. I just don't know who would be available. It's either going to be....

A. position coach who gets promoted
B. College HC
C. Fired DC or HC

So if Rodgers is a good coach (and he has been successful) and Coyle is to blame for the defensive woes, the main issue was a break down at DT....who is really responsible? or are the players just a combination of aging and not good enough?

The guy has been ONLY a D-line or DT coach for 20 years.

Is it a combination of aging, not good enough AND unimaginative coaching? Probably.

This defense has it's issues but I think if you take a DC like Gus Bradley, Rex Ryan, Todd Bowles, they could have been much better.

Damn I wish we had Bowles. He has gained a reputation for making the most out of nothing.

I would say Mark Duffner is more qualified than Rodgers. he has HC and DC experience. I was not advocating for a position coach from the Dolphins but from another team altogether.

Keith Butler: understudy to Dick LeBeau

Pepper Johnson: Former LB under Parcels, Bellichick and current Bills DL coach.

Steve Spagnuolo would be another candidate.

Joe, where did you read that Philbin is actually thinking about firing his buddy? I'll be shocked if he does that, especially without Ross telling him he has to.

I read that he asked for more time to give an answer after he evaluated everyone. if he was decided to keep him, don't you think he would have said so? Don't kill my hopes and dreams please! LOL

Coyle needs to go, every aspect of our offense improved over last year, despite major injuries all over the offense side of the ball.. Yet the defense declined in almost ever aspect over last year, granted they had some injuries as well....

If we had the same defensive stats as last year we probably win 3-4 more games... Coyle needs to go... The defense really fell apart towards the ends of the year...

If we had Bowles this year we'd only be losing him as a HC this off season and still need a replacement.

I don't know Rodgers. I've always heard people talk highly about him.

That doesn't make him a DC but I'd have to have that talk if I valued the work he'd done to this point.

As for the other guys, if we are actually replacing Coyle, then yes I'd be interested in interviewing most of them.
