Steve Ross just said the Viking game was one win, but Joe Philbin has one year left on his contract and is coming back.

That wouldn't have very much to do with coaching the team though. South Beach is nowhere near the Phins' training facility or stadium.

I know, I know.

It's just a pet peeve of mine. To me it's like saying a coaching candidate for the Pats isn't interested in Beantown or a candidate for the Giants head coach isn't interested in Staten Island.

...Or the price SF wants for him is too steep.

As for why announce it today...well they won. Would be silly to announce it if they lose to the jets and every day he waited after that game would be a firestorm in the media.

I guess if Ross was 100% keeping Philbin no matter what happens next week, but what if we get blown out by the hapless Jets? Could be a long off season trying to sell tickets

An owner can change him mind, can't he?

As you mentioned above dolphaholic, if Miami gets blown out next week....

How can Ross say he likes what he sees? What, mediocracy is OK with him? Lose to the Jets, and its the same ol same ol. Finish 9-7? Sure, its an improvement in the record, but the way the team played this year was no different than the past.

I heard thru the media that they are pleased with the improvement of Tanneyhill, and referred to Philbin. He has (almost) nothing to do with RT's improvement. That is on Lazor and RT himself.

Well, Philbin will be finishing out his four year contract next year. That will be his real test. If he can't get this team over the hump, I believe it is adios. Ross may say the right things, but he has a lot of money invested in this team. Money will do the talking.

All we can hope for is for Philbin to finally get things right and get the Fins in the playoffs. Next season will be his last chance to do that.

Well I told you so (see my post "STOP THE NONSENSE"winking smiley.

But of course you micro-minded football Neanderthals refuse to grasp the obvious reason W-H-Y this franchise is certifiably in the tank and is never (N-E-V-E-R) coming back unless and until we get rid of the titanic clown
known as "Ross."

As long Ross the Clown owns the franchise
we're "grandfathered" into the cesspool.
Yea, where the shit proliferates
and everyone pisses.

Can you dig it?

The N - F - L is a fixed league. Ross bought a turd. End of story.
Huizenga is a garbage man. And the ONLY way the garbage bag
he sold Ross turns into anything smelling decent is if Ross admits his mistake
and sells to someone who specializes in turning shit into good stuff.

Therefore, I highly recommend identifying the richest man in composting
who has roots and/or vines in SFL!

The proof is in what Ross has done with the franchise.

Absolute joke!!!!!!

BNF.

i saw a team that played it's a$$ off for their lame duck coach. I saw a D that blitzed and got abused when doing so for the most part.

this team lacks talent plain and simple. Ireland and parcells set this team back with horrible drafts.

get rid of coyle and let hickey have another offseason. we're not going to get a proven commodity at HC as long as Ross owns the team.

According to Twitter last night Coyle's not going anywhere, and even if he did fire him, what proven commodity you gonna get to work for a lame duck coach on his last leg?

Plus, was it all Coyles fault? You had an undersized, aging defensive front that wore down as the year went on and a hodge podge secondary due to injuries.......oh, did I mention our stellar LB's?

his d's have gotten worse each year. he's in over his head. you just need someone with experience and that's willing to go 3-4. if he succeeds then maybe he's in line for a HC opening.

Looks like another 8-8 year next year and me not getting direct ticket once again. Hope the bike season lasts longer than late october so I have things to do.

Right before half time that was some of the worst clock management decision making I've ever seen by a coach. I wanted him fired at halftime.

The D has gotten worse every year VS THE RUN because our DT's are in decline and we have no dynamic LB's and no true MLB.

Coyle has not been great, no doubt BUT....

Coaches don't miss tackles. They should not even have to waste time teaching "fundamentals" during the regular season. These guys are pros that make a lot of money. If they don't "remember" how to tackle then there are bigger issues at hand. Do you think Jim Bates had to "remind" Zach Thomas how to tackle? Marvin Lewis to Ray Lewis?

Starks powered through in the end of yesterday's game and was a big reason for the win BUT his big plays are getting fewer and farther between.

We do need another off season to stock talent and weed out the ones who are not earning their money.

The age of this defense tells me that we have not been hitting in the draft.

Starks 31
Wake 32
Grimes 31
Finnegan 30
Trusnik 30
Ellerbe 29

What do they all have in common? All were signed, not drafted.

Draft a friggin DT and a LB and a CB. Our offense will be better just by getting healthy (Albert/Clay) but we still need someone who can play T & G.

We are also going to have to sign a big FA, somewhere.

Mitchell is not the answer at DT. He is a backup. Odrick is a 3-4 DE but adequate rotational guy and a FA.

I just hope Hickey can see the writing on the wall and not be stubborn about Mitchell just because he signed him. HE IS NOT WORTH 4.5 mil. Starks is not worth 6 mil any longer.

He had his choice of DT's last off season and could have taken a run at Jay Ratcliff or Henry Melton who were coming off injuries and posed a certain risk but both have been back among the elite this year.

BNF was right all along. Nothing is going to happen as long as we have a buffoon for an owner.

Joe Robbe....I miss you.

Well, holic, I'll take a shot at your first question (above).

Hire a coach that Ross would like to have as his next HC. If Philbin fails, then Miami's HC is already on board.

Was Miami's defensive fall because of Coyle? He, along with the rest of the coaches, made some poor decisions, but at the same time, Coyle called some stellar games. Injuries played a part in Miami's season, both on offense and defense, which also affected special teams.

Hard to blame any one area when "the team" performs poorly.

Cap, if you have a problem and if everyone is to blame then no one is to blame and if no one is to blame, then there's no blame so how can you have a problem?

I can only think of two guys that might be available that are HC matl and good DC's, Mike Nolan (may be available?) and Rex Ryan. Both will have pick of the litter as DC's and both might get serious consideration this year as HC's. While your theory sounds good Cap, I think it's a pipe dream to think either one have a desire to join a lame duck staff on it's last leg.

As far as a "promise" of being the next HC here, that would be the most dysfunctional thing that Ross could ever do, one, it would undermine Philbin, and two, what if we wen't 6-10 because our defense sucked? Why would you promote the DC under that scenario?

If we suck next year and fire Philbin, I want a total house cleaning, no more of this fire Sparano, keep Ireland, fire Ireland, keep Philbin crap. Pressing the nuke button and starting fresh is the best way to go IMO.
