KB, in the undefeated season, Griese went out with an injury early in the season. Earl Morrall took over and went undefeated up until the SuperBowl. Many, including me, said, "Play Morrall" but Shula played Griese and we won. I notice this website has Morrall for the quarterback that year but if you click on the SuperBowl for that year, you'll see Morrall never played in it.

Miami was behind at the end of the first half vs Pitt in the playoff game. Griese came in for the second half and led Miami to the win. Griese then started the Super Bowl and won.

I believe the score was *tied* at halftime but Shula definitely thought Griese could provide a spark, which of course he did.
Morrall took Shula's decision like a team player, sportsman and a gentleman. IN other words, in the opposite manner of the way today's prima donnas would act.
You all know how the story ends...we win the championship, we win the SB undefeated, and Morrall is unanimously voted team MVP...after all he won a majority of the games and had the longest run from scrimmage that year (!)
Thanks for correcting my memory Cap but I did remember controversy as to who should start the SuperBowl, nonetheless, and I do remember me, Bob's biggest fan, thinking errrrr maybe Morrall would be the safe bet.
something that really rankled the players. Philbin had them attend leadership classes, something that kept them late at the facility. They weren't sure why, they didn't really understand it."
wow, this coach is anything but a leader...he is delusional!
Well, he's a leader now. Twenty-two (22) minor assistant coaching jobs before he is elevated to head coach of the proudest NFL franchise ever by an idiot.....and he is at last a head coach.
While I'm not in favor of five threads in a few days being about the same subject, at this point I have to agree.
When Gibson did what he did just now, Philbin should have chewed him out and sat him down. Instead they just had a little chat on the sideline. That right there is a microcosm of how Philbin has no control over his squad.

Smart move.
>What did Gibson do?
He caught a pass about 10-12 yards short of the first down marker. Defender had him tied up so ref blew whistle. Defender then slammed Gibson to the ground a few seconds after play called dead. Gibson runs to official to complain...is successful...ref throws personal foul flag against defender. This is the point where Gibson should have trotted back to the huddle with a smile on his face.
But no.
Gibson runs BACK to the defender and taunts him, drawing unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. What would have been a first down on the first penalty being marched off gets negated. Then he goes back to the sideline and Philbin appears to have a casual talk with him about the weather or something.
