Those players are not under contract and do not count against the salary cap. How exactly are we saving anything? We still have to resign someone to fill their place IF we don't resign them.
We are reported to have around 28 mil in cap space. We need to find a starting......
LT, LG, RG, RT, FS, DT & CB
Beyond that we need.....
CB3, Better o-line reserves, upgrade at ILB, WLB and DT3.
Hopefully the new GM can get Dimitri Patterson to cut his salary (or cut him) and Mike Wallace to restructure his contracts to free up some of the 17 mil he counts against the cap this year.
Also...a HB who can block, SS and TE.
We can also free up 5.4 mil if we have to release Dimitri and about 1m if we cut Daniel Thomas.
Once again we have dead weight in the top salaries of the cap. Wheeler and Ellerbe count about 14 mil but we can cut each in half if do the June 1st desgnation OR get creative with a trade.
That's an additional 13 mil in cap space for 2014. 41 million in cap space ought to do the trick to fill those gaps.
