The Dolphins currently hold the sixth and final seed in the AFC with a record of 8-7. Also tied with them at the same record are the Chargers and Ravens, but Miami owns the tiebreaker over both teams. Therefore, the ball is in their court now.

Miami does NOT hold the head to head tiebreaker with the Ravens. We lost to them.
If we finish in tie with just the ravens, we lose.
If its a 3 team tiebreaker with the chargers and ravens then we win.
If its a 4 team tiebreaker with Pitt, Bal and SD we lose.

It's a lot easier for us fans to just sit back, hope Miami wins, then let the chips fall where they may.

Not true, in no scenario can Miami lose and still get in.
Holic, you're right. I didn't realize that 1) the Jets have only a 7-8 record themselves and more importantly, even though we beat them earlier and would tie head to head, they would finish the division race 3-3 while we would finish 2-4 (those two losses to Buffalo screwing us again).
So regardless of how many other teams tie us at 8-8, under the NFL rules all ties between teams in the same division are broken first and we would be eliminated.
So you're right. We simply can't lose to the Jesters.
we need to win and hope either Bal or SD loses. Frankly I think the first part of the equation seems least likely.
KC will be playing their backups so a SD loss is unlikely. Cin is playing for a #2 seed so should be playing all out against Bal. The phins generally lose games like this (just like last week).

The beatings will continue until morale improves.
Don't we actually need the Chargers to win? that would give us the 3 way tie with the Ravens, and if it's just us and SD, we beat them head to head. The Ravens are the ones we need to lose.
Yes, we need to root for Baltimore to lose and SD to win. SD winning does not hurt us in any way, and if they win (and we win) we go to the playoffs regardless of what Baltimore does. Fortunately KC will be resting a lot of their starters against SD.

Truth is correct. If we end up in a 2-way tie with Baltimore then Baltimore goes based on head-to-head (they beat us). If we end up in a 2-way tie with SD, then we go based on head-to-head. If all three end up tied, then we go based on conference record (the head-to-head records cancel each other out).
I heard the explanation on the radio yesterday. In a 2-way tie, the first tie breaker is head-to-head (and Baltimore wins that against us). in a 3-way tie, conference record is the tie breaker (and we beat both Baltimore and San Diego). So, that's why a San Diego win puts us in even if Baltimore wins.
If they Dolphins put their best effort together they will win. If they make the playoffs...the stars were aligned in their favor. We will know tonight for sure.
