I favor getting the ball first and ramming it down the opponents throat for a TD. Drawing first blood; getting the first punch in; the first shot; whatever one wants to call it-- put the opponent on his heels. Keeping the D off the field as long as possible can have a positive effect in the 3rd and 4th quarter of the game. Scoring first, I believe has a positive effect on the D as well.

I, honestly, don't think it makes a difference.

It depends on several factors, mainly weather. Buffalo is an outdoor stadium
Is there a strong wind blowing. Do you want to start off playing with the wind or against it. Is the sun out at kickoff. Will there be a possibility of the sun being in the receiver's eyes when he turns to catch the ball in the first quarter. All these factors could change significantly by the second quarter, certainly by the second half.

I swear when I read the Subject to your post I stopped reading after "....against Buffalo" like it was a normal grammar pause?
My mind immediately thought you were kind of making fun of the QB's, & "If we win toss against Buffalo," referred to the entire game like it would be really ugly with 2 QB's tossing incomplete passes back & forth? Not making fun, just my mind wanders at times? I understand & that is one of maybe 4-5 locations where you might not defer when winning the toss!
Dependent on the weather! This time of year it probably won't matter though!

Keep in mind that you are only deferring the choice.

But for all practical purposes though, the other team will certainly take the ball right now and you will certainly take the ball in the second half.

So it gets back to whether you are so afraid that the opposing team will score on the very first possession of the game....but not on the second possession after you get the ball and fail to score.

But if the other team is so big and bad that you think they will score as soon they touch the ball, why wouldn't that same team score RIGHT AFTER YOU PUNT AFTER RECEIVING THE KICKOFF AND FAILING TO SCORE YOURSELF???? Or are you saying that it is a given that you yourself will score?????????????

The odds are that the longer the game goes, the more the odds are in favor of EITHER team scoring and the earlier in the game it is, the less likely EITHER team will score at all. This being true, getting the kickoff in the Second half instead of the first half is the better bet.

And that's not even to mention your ability to either close any gap or increase any lead and having two back to back possessions.

What are the odds that you (or the other team for that matter) will score on the very first possession of the game?????????

Mind you...if they DON'T SCORE then you've done the worst thing possible...you have given up your chance to get the ball at the start of the second half and THAT MEANS you've given them the chance for two possessions in a row or to make up any deficit OR to increase any lead.

That's only worth it if a large percentage of times the team receiving the opening kickoff at least scores.

The question is what percentage of time does the team receiving the opening kick score a touchdown or field goal.

Now I've typed this before I've gone to look at the stats for each game played by all teams this year. Maybe PFF has it.

I would think we defer. The strongest part about Buffalo is their defense. So we don't want to allow them to get momentum and field position by putting the strongest part of their team on the field first. Lets make them start 3 and out, get field position. Then try and score some points on a short field.

SamSam, I'm beginning a week by week review, of all games in the NFL and I have just finished week 2 only, involving every team and it's coming out that about in 33% of the games, the team with the ball first scored AND THAT'S EITHER A FIELD GOAL OR A TOUCHDOWN, the first time they got the ball.

I am just starting week three but after I read your post it didn't fit with my memory so I went back and check for Dolphin games only for the whole season so far and here are the facts:

Week 1 Redskins received the kickoff and went on to score a Field Goal

Week 2 Jags received the Kickoff and went on to score a Touchdown

Week 3 BILLS received the kickoff and HAD TO PUNT

week 4 JETS received the kickoff and HAD TO PUNT

Week 5 against Titans we received the kickoff and scored a touchdown

Week 6 the Texans received the kickoff and had to punt

Week 7 The Patriots received the kickoff and scored a TD.

Now keep in mind this does not say who won the coin toss and whether they decided to keep the ball or defer.

Go to NFL.com, then go to "teams" then select the Dolphins and it will give you the schedule for the year and the score of past games. Click on "Game Center" as to EACH GAME. Then click on "Analyze" then click on "play by play."

Then look to see who received the kickoff and how that drive ended.

Nowdays when a team stops new england to about 19 points in a half.........................You can say you played very good defense....

Make that 17 if you take away the safety.....

To me the decision should alway be a week to week decision based on the strengths and weakness of the opponent and our team.
The question is do we have a better chance of stopping the Bills offense verse our offense scoring on the Bills defense to open the game.. It seems like an easy answer to me..
If we receive, and the Bills stop us right out of the gate. They have gained the field position advantage and the momentum starting out the game... I imagine if the Bills win the toss they will defer and force us to attempt put our offense on the field to put us in that very position. Is it possible our offense can overcome, sure, but the better bet is no..

It is a no brainer IMO, we want the Bills offense on the field first, if we have the choice... While anything can happen in a football game, based on stats, strengths and weakness of the match up, that is the logical decision...

Well, Crowder, they say you never defer, I say you always defer. You say it depends on the other team. That's a THIRD point of view.

As to your Bills argument, as you say, if the opposition has a weak offense, you defer.

But I would still say if the team is New England WITH A GREAT OFFENSE, you try your best to stop Brady on the opening drive and if you fail, hope to make it up by scoring on your first possession of the SECOND half.

The old wisdom is that if you have a good defense, you defer and get better position on the opening drive. Figure the opponent gets the ball starting at the 20 yard line, moves the ball in 3 downs to the 27 yard line, punts for about 44 yards. This would leave you at around the 29 yards line to start your offensive drive.

It was mentioned during one of the latest Patriots games that Belichek always defers because he wants the chance to have the ball last in the 1st half and 1st in the 2nd half to put together back to back scoring drives.

If you're behind in the game, scoring twice in a row should get you right back in the game. If you're leading the game at that point, scoring twice in a row could put the game out of reach early in the 2nd half.

They also mentioned that in the Brady/Belichek era, the Patriots are the most successful team at scoring at the end of the half and following it up with a score on their opening drive of the 2nd.

Deferring also provides the old school benefit that Toko mentioned. If you want to play field position football, you have to believe you have a good defense. So it makes sense to kick to start the game, force the 3 and out and punt, and start with better field position than just receiving the opening kick off.

So old school, time of possession teams would favor kicking and new breed score a lot of points teams would also favor kicking to get the back to back scoring opportunities.

The only way I see that you would actually want to start the game with the ball, is if your defense isn't a strength and you want to shorten the game by getting your offense on the field first to start running clock as soon as possible.

The way I see it is that I always want the ball to set the tone if I score. I think you should always be agressive with your offense. Hence my never, ever, defer stance.
