It's because many people (fans, writers, sports casters) have a chip on their shoulder about the 72 Dolphins. Many people think that there have been many, many, better teams since 72.
I.E. 2000's Patriots, 2000's Packers, 90's Dallas, 70's Pittsburgh, 80's 49ers, 85 Bears, etc, etc.
Then there is the amount of time that's gone by since it happened.

That last reason is probably the biggest one. Because the undefeated season happened way back in the 70s. I see the effects of it right here on this board, where some of the younger posters specifically wanted the Pats to win the SB during their undefeated season, and the Colts during their undefeated run, etc.
So those "many people" can stick it where the sun don't shine, because perfect is perfect! The 72 dolphins weren't particularly popular nationwide in 1972 either. The Redskins were favored to beat us in that super bowl. But I never was one to care what other people think, especially when I know I'm right. So a big raspberry to the NFL network.
There is no context. You can't tell if they are comparing as if they were going to play, or if the determining factor is who dominated their era the most, heck you don't even know what rules they would use in a hypothetical matchup.
This is nothing more than a glorified beauty pageant. And in those things the 40 something mother of two has no shot versus the 20 year old Hawaiian tropic swimsuit model.
To all the youngsters who like to say bring the '72 Dolphins to 2012 and ANY NFL team could beat them I'd say: Send ANY NFL team back to 1972 and let them live and train like those guys had to : No millionaire lifestyles, personal trainers, doctors, drugs, training facilities, etc. Then let them PLAY like those guys did : Let opposing teams hit QB's 3 seconds after they release the ball, in the knees or anywhere else. Let them face mask, horse collar and hit players 10 yards out of bounds. Let them mug the receivers and ENCOURAGE them to hit them while defenseless to knock the ball lose, in the head or anywhere else. And last but not least, lets see flag football queen Tom Brady break his leg in game 5 and then start the superbowl like Griese did 1972 Phins....PERFECT.

I agree 100% with KB. The Patriots offense wouldn't even function playing under 1972 rules. Wes Welker would be leaving on a stretcher during the first quarter.
