Greg Cosell ? @gregcosell
Been asked a lot about Weeden. Watched 4 gms. Saw NFL route combinations + progression reads. Velocit between the numbers. Less outside.
Greg Cosell ? @gregcosell
More Weeden: Poise + patience to his play. Some excellent seam throws. Inconsistent accuracy. Would like to see better ball location overall
Greg Cosell ? @gregcosell
More Weeden: Tendency to drift in pocket with poor footwork + balance in response to pressure. Must be corrected to be quality NFL starter.
Inconsistent accuracy and poor footwork, sounds like a poor fit for the WCO
Yeah, I posted these in another thread, you must of missed em
Greg Cosell ? @gregcosell
Tannehill better prospect than Ponder. NIce feel in pocket. Good pocket mobility re: lack of experience. Willing to make stick throws.
Greg Cosell ? @gregcosell
Tannehill needs work with progession reading but can be coached. Must learn to validate safeties after snap. Threw well outside the numbers.
Greg Cosell ? @gregcosell
Tannehill threw w/anticipation. NFL throws: Outs, seams, hooks. Poised w/downfield focus. May have best pocket command + mobility in class.
Greg Cosell ? @gregcosell
Asked about Cousins. Compact delivery but not big arm. Ability to progression read NFL route combinations. Efficient off play + boot action.
Greg Cosell ? @gregcosell
More Cousins: Needs functional space. Tendency to drift in response to pressure. No special qualities. Neither big arm nor highly accurate
Greg Cosell ? @gregcosell
Cousins example of QB who must be managed + manipulated by scheme to be effective due to passing limitations. True of most, like M. Flynn.
Yikes, doesn't sound like Cousins fits real well in a WCO either.
I predict that Tannehill will be gone before the 8th pick. With the new rookie salary rules it makes drafting a QB early in the 1st round a lot less risky compared to what it used to be.
I'm with you jlyell. I ain't buying it. I think Tannehill would be lunacy anywhere before Weeden. If there is a team that is going to draft him, my number one choice is Cleveland and my choices from number 2 to number 31 are ANY TEAM OTHER THAN THE DOLPHINS.
Puh-leeze pass on him. Tannehill sounds like all those other post Marino quarterbacks we have drafted AFTER Marino EXCEPT for the fact that we did not use a top ten pick on any of them.
Dolphaholic, what are people going to say 6 years from now when Tannehill joins that group?
I can hear what would be an honest excuse now,
"Well, you have to remember what time it was and what shape we were in. We had not drafted a QB high since Marino. Barkley skipped out that year and Andrew Luck and RGIII had been taken.
We really WANTED to draft a QB in the first round at that point.
Oh, please, PLEASE! We needed to. We hadn't done it in a long Time, For Godsakes! He was what was AVAILABLE.
Yeah, it's true that Weeden has been in the playoffs and has gone to the pro bowl. BUT ALL THE SCOUTS SAID HE WAS NOT AS GOOD. And we were running the West Coast offense at the time and he did not seem a good fit.
So, you see, we did it because we HAD TO DRAFT A QUARTERBACK HIGH IN THE FIRST ROUND and since everybody projected Weeden as a later 1ST ROUND or second round pick, we HAD TO!!!!!!
But I'm reminded of what one poster said a few days ago to the effect of "just because you are down to your fifth option, that doesn't make that option as good as your first option, it is still only your fifth option." In other words, don't spend high first round money on what in any other atmosphere would be rated a fifth round draft choice.

Yeah, I always preface the draft talk with "I don't watch enough college football to know", but there are a few "experts" I trust more then others, and Greg Cosell is at the top of the list. Ultimately though, it won't matter what Cosell, McShay, Brandt or Kiper says about Tannehill, we hired Philbin and Sherman for reason, and just like with Flynn, I'll trust their opinion, if they say he's the real deal, then I'll give him the benefit of a doubt, same goes if they pass.
The other dynamic in all of this is Cleveland, I don't think they'll take him at #4, but its possible. It could also be a situation where they grab Blackmon then trade him to the Rams if Tannehill's still there at #6. I'd like to think Sherman will have a feel for, or even strong connections to someone close to Holmgren, so that he'll know which way he's leaning on Tannehill. Like berk, not sure I wanna trade up to #3 to get him, too costly.

Right! But nothing has really proven Mallett to be a bust. Last time I checked Tom Brady was still the starting QB in the Pats last game. Oh Yeah, that was the SuperBowl. It amazes me how people can call him a bust. As far as Tannehill is concerned, he is another Flynn, in effect, no proven track record. That's why we call him "a potential bust." Like I told, dolphaholic. I can be wrong.
Funny thing is that the real thing is that there are people on the board who cannot possibly conceive of themselves as being wrong when after all, no matter all that is said and done, we are all reading tealeaves.
Yes, A & O, that includes the possibility that RGIII, a QB that both you and I have heralded and advocated, could ALSO turn out to be a bust [just ask Finshady].
When you put a 2nd round tender on your second string QB that means one of two things:
1) You have ZERO confidence in your 3rd string QB
2) You are really HIGH on your second string QB
I have heard nor seen anything that leads me to believe that Hoyer is a very good QB. I have heard nor seen anything that leads me to believe Hoyer is considered a very good back up QB. I conclude that the Pats, at this point, have very little confidence in Mallet. Now that doesn't mean he is a bust or he can't develop into a good QB. But that does say that Mallet would NOT have been the answer this season or last season at QB. He needs lots of development, which is clear based on the fact that he is buried behind Hoyer on the depth chart.
I don't see the Patriots cutting him. I don't see them trading him. I can see putting Hoyer, who has had NFL experience on the chart ahead of him.
I haven't looked but where is Garrard on our chart? Is he number three? I would be shocked if he's not number 2.
Yet, Ryan Mallett has NO NFL PLAYING EXPERIENCE probably outside of pre-season, yet you expect him to be number 2 on the depth chart when Hoyer arrives.
It makes sense for the Pats to go into the season with Brady and a back-up who has NFL experience. Beyond that, we must see how the pre-season works out.
A & O, you're a fine military man. And being a military man, you know, as I learned from such men growing up in basically, Fort Sill, Oklahoma, you should be the most careful when you are the most desperate.
At times like that, the most improbable option seems like a sure bet. Better to pull back and await a better opportunity.

Dude.
He's a third round rookie QB.
He's not a bust.
He's an "incomplete."
And Hoyer SHOULD beat him out coming out of preseason (even if Mallett may have out played him) because he KNOWS THE SYSTEM.

Well, he's only been doing it since 1984. And he is highly respected by NFL people. His opinion matters a lot more than anyone on this board.

I agree that he is an imcomplete but it's not a very promising start. Hoyer was an undrafted QB albeit with a few years in the system. Mallet was a potential 1st round pick until character concerns dropped him (mobility concerns probably dropped him some as well). We will see if Mallet can claim the #2 job this off season and if he doesn't then it bodes ill for his future.
