The Deep Ball Criticism
Posted by: dolfanmark ()

People are way too obsessed with hitting the deep throw. They have a strange perception of how often these passes are completed. Henne and Moore each missed deep throws tonight. But, the vast majority of those throws are missed.

In 2010, Tom Brady completed 5 out of 19 pass attempts of more than 30 yards. Peyton Manning completed 7 out of 25 attempts of more than 30 yards. Aaron Rodgers completed 7 out of 22. Roethlisberger hit 8 out of 19. That is 4 elite QBs, and they hit 27 out of 85. That's 31%. If you hit one out of 3, you are doing pretty well. What's important is that we are attempting the deep ball, at least forcing the defense to defend it. And we'll get better at hitting it as the season wears on.

Very good point. Omar Kelly keeps trashing Henne's deep ball, suggesting that he hits about 2 out of every 10 in practice. I suspect he is a little off. As a math teacher, I would have simplified that ratio.

Didn't he live on the deep ball at MICH?

My guess is that we didn't practice it enough in the past couple years...didn't attempt it enough in games...therefore, when it came time to produce, it was as if it was not practiced enough and not attempted often enough.

I know that he has the arm and an ability to hit the long throw (see Ginn streaking behind Revis and some other member of the Jets secondary on Monday night game a couple years ago). He's nowhere near perfect on the deep ball, but I honestly don't think the perceived struggle is primarily about his capability.

He just needs more attempts at it.

It will come with more throws. There will be big TD's this season guaranteed.

The reason why is simple REGGIE Bush will demand defenses to play on him and let Hartline beat up a Corner, and easily get behind the FS on numerous play's.

Well with Bush and Marshall running shallow or middle routes the deep will be there more, so its gonna be important that Henne hit those throws. Henne was decent vs Carolina but can he be consistent, we'll see

BTW Hello Everyone, new to the forum seems fun

I'm sold. I am beginning to understand why they drafted him in the first place. I actually liked the pick at the time, but like most fans, I grew impatient with him. That is partly because we have had to watch the success of Ryan. I think with the right pieces now, we will see a different Henne.

One must also realize that the sample space for the long throws is so small that just one more completion significantly increases the percentage. I suspect that, this year, the sample space and completion percentage will grow because of the Daboll's change in philosophy and the added speed to the receiver core. The video shows that Henne is more than capable of making the passes, this year the concerted effort to throw long will breed more success.
