GAME PREVIEW:
Tomorrow the Dolphins face the Chicago Bears in their second
preseason game of the year at 1 PM, Eastern Time in Chicago. And as
with the first game, the focus tomorrow will be on individual
performances more than it will be on winning and losing.
JJ has said that by the Minnesota game next week, he will
have stabilized the starting lineup and will be working on making the
team work together consistently. What that means is that tomorrow
will be the last chance for players to show what they can do under
game conditions before JJ sets the starting lineup.
The latest starting lineup looks like this:
OFFENSE DEFENSE
QB - 13 Dan Marino RDE - 96 Daniel Stubbs
RB - 40 Irving Spikes RDT - 95 Tim Bowens
FB - 36 Stanley Pritchett LDT - 92 Daryl Gardener
WR - 81 OJ McDuffie LDE - 93 Trace Armstrong
WR - 89 Randal Hill SLB - 50 Dwight Hollier
TE - 46 Kerry Cash MLB - 54 Zach Thomas
LT - 78 Richmond Webb WLB - 55 Chris Singleton
LG - 69 Keith Sims LCB - 27 Terrell Buckley
C - 61 Tim Ruddy RCB - 37 JB Brown
RG - 62 Chris Gray SS - 35 Michael Stewart
RT - 79 Billy Milner FS - 28 Gene Atkins
Kickoffs - 6 Joe Nedney
Field Goals - 10 Pete Stoyanovich
Punt Returns - 81 OJ McDuffie (or 27 Terrell Buckley)
Kick Returns - 32 Jerris McPhail
The principal changes from last week include the first
appearance of OJ McDuffie, who didn't play last week; Daryl Gardener
moving from defensive end to defensive tackle; Zach Thomas starting in
place of Jack Del Rio, who was waived last week and Gene Atkins
starting in place of rookie Shawn Wooden.
Even though Wooden was injured last week, he will play this
week, but lost his starting position.
The biggest impact of tomorrows game will be on a number of
players who are struggling to make the team. Some of the players who
need to have great games tomorrow include LaCurtis Jones, Kirk
Pointer, Brice Hunter, AC Tellison, Joe Planansky and, of course,
Terry Kirby and Pete Stoyanovich.
With all the trade rumors swirling around Kirby and
Stoyanovich, it may be too late for either player to save their career
with the Dolphins, but a superior performance could keep them in
Miami.
Offensively, the Dolphins will attempt to establish the power
running game with Irving Spikes getting the starting shot at running
back. The key, of course, will be how well the offensive line can get
off the line of scrimmage and open the holes for Spikes to run
through.
Defensively, the Dolphins will try to get a good push off the
line of scrimmage with the defensive line. This week, Daryl Gardener
will move inside to defensive tackle and Trace Armstrong will get to
start at end. But the most significant change on the defense will be
the change at middle linebacker, where Zach Thomas will start.
So far, Thomas has been one of the most pleasant surprises of
training camp. He has lead the team in tackles during both the
scrimmage with the Redskins and the preseason game last week with
Bucs. It will be interesting to see how he handles the starting role.
THINGS TO WATCH FOR:
Remember this is only the second game of the preseason and JJ
will still want to take a look at a lot of different players during
the course of the game. However, there will be some things you
should look for:
The Running Game: Just like last week, the development of the
running game is key to the Dolphins offensive scheme. And so you
should look at not just the running backs, but also at the run
blocking.
The Defensive Pass Rush: Watch the defensive line to see if
they're breaking down the pocket and getting pressure on the
quarterback.
Zach Thomas: The Dolphins' new starting middle linebacker
will get his chance to shine.
Terry Kirby: This could be his last game as a Dolphin, if he
doesn't pull out all the stops and really work hard.
Pete Stoyanovich: Like Kirby, Stoyo is also rumored to be on
the trading block. Tomorrow, Stoyo will be given the opportunity to
kick field goals. If he misses even one, it will hurt his chances
enormously.
Bryan Cox: Just in case you've been living on the space
station "Mir" for the last 6 months and haven't heard - Bryan Cox is
playing for the Bears this coming season and will start at linebacker
for them, where his primary job will be to rush Dan Marino.
